Words to Know

HOLY NATION - a group of people set apart to love and serve God

RELIABLE - can be depended and counted on

ROYAL PRIESTS- God’s special priest

PERFORMING- acting out, as a play

The Lesson

The boys and girls in the Sabbath School were putting on a play. They would present it during the worship service. They were acting out the story of Moses. The teacher was giving out the parts after class.

Beth wanted very much to be in the play. She wanted to play the part of Moses sister, Miriam. Not everyone would get to be in the play. The teacher would pick only those children who came every week. There were many lines to memorize. The children would have to work very hard. But it was a special honor to be chosen.

Being chosen for something special often means you must be reliable. That means you can be counted on. That was the case for Moses and the Israelites.

They had been walking through the wilderness for three months. They came to Mt. Sinai and made camp at the bottom. God wanted to talk to Moses on the mountain. He had a message for the Israelites.

God reminded them of how He had saved them from the Egyptians. He gave them everything they needed. He took care of them.

God parted the waters of the Red Sea and dried up the ground. He protected the Israelites with the pillar of fire. He gave them manna and quail to eat. He gave them water to drink. Now God was choosing these people to be His own special people.

It was very special to be chosen to serve God. It meant that the people would have to love God with all their hearts. They would have to obey Him. They would have to do whatever He told them to do.

Were there times when the Israelites acted like they didn't love God? They grumbled and complained when their food ran out. They wanted to kill Moses when their water was gone. How would they treat God now?

Moses came down from the mountain. He called all the leaders and people together. He told them what God had said. And all the people said, "We will do everything the Lord has said." God told them that He owned the whole world. But, those who loved and obeyed Him would be His holy nation.

God wanted to meet Moses on the mountain again. This time everyone would know that God was there. His cloud and lightning would cover the top of the mountain. When He talked, it would sound like thunder. God said no one else should go near the mountain. They couldn't touch it or they would be punished. God was going to give the people His rules to live by - the Ten Commandments.

You have also been chosen as part of God's holy nation. Everyone who loves and obeys God can be a part of that nation. But, God expects His people to love Him with all their hearts. He wants you to do what is right. He wants you to treat others like you want to be treated. He wants to be able to count on you. Will you answer like the Israelites, "We will do everything the Lord has said”?

Student Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank you for choosing the Israelites to be your royal priests. I want to love you and serve you with all my heart, too. Help me obey you and do what you tell me to do.
In Jesus' name.
Amen

Materials Needed

Bible, YEA Students' and Teacher's books, attendance and memory verse charts, stickers, music player and CD or cassette, songbook, apron, briefcase, toy police badge, toy stethoscope, garden hose, card stock, instant camera (or children's pictures), scissors, glue, clear Contact paper, ink pad

Preparation

Primary-aged children are becoming skilled at reading, but may be embarrassed to read aloud in front of the class. Ask for volunteers when reading short passages of Scripture. Take advantage of their ability to memorize by giving them opportunities to quote their memory verse at appropriate times during the lesson.

This is the last lesson in this unit. Present a small gift to all the children who can name the ten plagues, as was assigned at the beginning of this book.

Before you come to class, make enough copies of the"God's Child I.D. Cards" for each child to have one (located on the pattern page). Cut enough pieces of clear Contact paper into 4 × 6 inch pieces for each child to have two.

How to Teach This Lesson

Serving God is the highest privilege of our Christian life. We can never repay God for all of His blessings or for His great gift of salvation. Our service for Him should be our love-response for what He has done and will do for us.

But, being chosen to be a part of God's holy nation also carries with it a great responsibility. It is this responsibility that should be emphasized in today's lesson. God's servants should have a willingness to do whatever He commands them to do. And, this willingness should not be a mere lip service, but should show up in actions so that others may see your good works and glorify God.

Begin by asking for volunteers to be: Mother, Dad, Policeman, Fireman, Nurse. Give the mother an apron to wear; give Dad a briefcase; pin a badge on the policeman; give the fireman a short length of garden hose with a nozzle on the end; put a toy stethoscope around the nurse’s check.

Ask each child (or the class collectively) what responsibilities each of the following has: mother, dad, policeman, fireman, and nurse. Each one has jobs they must do. They are expected to do these job. People are not forced to do these job; they make a choice.

God’s Care for the Israelites - Before God asked the Israelites to make a choice whether to serve Him or not, He reminded them of all He had done for Him. Ask: What are some of the things that God had already done for the Israelites? (Allow the children to give as many answers as they can think of. He took them out of Egyptian slavery, led them with a cloud and pillar of fire, opened the Red Sea, destroyed the Egyptians, gave them food in the wilderness, gave water from a rock, helped them win the battle over their enemies.)

God’s Care for You - Ask: What has God provided for you? (Food, clothing, a family, parents who take care of you) God has also given you the knowledge that you can go to Him and ask for the things you need.

Forgetful - The Israelites didn't always remember all the good things God had done for them. They didn't always act thankful. Ask: How did they act when they ran out of food? What did they do when there was no more water? They wanted to go back to Egypt instead of following God's leading. What would happen if the fireman gave up and quit because fires are hot and dangerous? Or, what would happen if Mom said, "I'm tired of cooking and taking care of my family?" (Allow the children to think about the consequences of not fulfilling responsibilities.)

God's Message - God wanted to talk to Moses. He called him up to the top of Mt. Sinai. Ask: How did the people know that God was there talking to Moses? God told Moses that He had chosen the Israelites to be His royal priests. But, there was something they must do to be a part of His holy nation. Ask: What would the Israelites have to do? And, how did the people answer when Moses told them God’s message?

If you want to be a part of God’s holy nation, you will have responsibilities. Ask: What does God want His people to do today? How can you obey God when you are at home? What can you do at school to obey God?

Teacher-Directed Activity

To help the children make a “God's Child I.D. Card," you will need an instant camera to take pictures of each child (or have them bring a picture from home). Give each child an I.D. card (located on the pattern page). Have them cut their face out of the picture so that it fits the space on the card. Glue the picture in place. Have each child put their thumb print in the middle of the card by pressing the thumb onto a washable ink pad and then in the square. Laminate the card by placing it between two pieces of clear Contact paper. Have the children trim around the edge, leaving about I/4 inch of Contact paper beyond the edge of the card.

REACH Activity

Materials Needed: tempera paint, paint brushes, clay, package of colorful construction paper, string, glue, tape, Kids Classics Collection songbook and/or CDs, Bible, YEA book, Bible notebook, black permanent marker, watercolor paints, 11 x 17 drawing paper, pencils, markers, colored pencils, crayons, scissors, ruler, index cards, CEM Hymnal, Bible dictionary, concordance, access to encyclopedia or the Internet, Bible encyclopedia, Bible map or Bible atlas, dictionary, pictures of the Rocky Mountains, write-on transparency film, crown, trumpet, horn, or recording of a trumpet or horn

1. Practice reciting the plagues of Egypt.

2. Do a sword drill with the Daily Devotionals for this week.

NOTE: Sword drill: Use the Daily Devotional Scriptures to have a sword drill. Read the Scripture reference to the child. Then start the timer. When the child has found the verse, stop the timer. Read the verse and talk about how it relates to the lesson. Challenge the child to see how quickly he/ she can find each of the verses in the Bible.

3. Moses and the Israelites came to Mount Sinai. Where is Mount Sinai? Use a Bible map to find it and draw it in your Bible notebook.

4. Read the description of the mountain in Exodus 19:16-19. Draw a picture.

5. Find a calendar picture or magazine picture of the Rocky Mountains. Write the memory verse on a sheet of transparency film that has been trimmed to overlay the mountain picture exactly. Then cut a piece of construction paper just a little bigger than the mountain picture and transparency film. Glue the mountain picture on the construction paper. Then glue strips of construction paper around the edges of the transparency film to hold the transparency film on the mountain picture.

6. Find or make a crown. Some dollar or craft stores have inexpensive crowns or tiaras. Or make a crown from materials of your choice. Use felt or other material to attach to the back of the crown. Write the memory verse on the material with glitter glue. During the YEA lesson have the students wear their crowns. And then give them time to practice the verse until memorized.

7. In your Bible notebook, write and explain about a time when you were chosen to do something special. How did it make you feel to be “chosen”? Draw a picture to go with your explanation. Share your story and picture with family or Sabbath School class.

8. Once you are chosen for a part in a play, you have the responsibility to learn the lines for the performance. In the same way, when God chooses you as His child, you have the responsibility to act as His child. List in your Bible notebook things God expects you to do.

9. Read the definition of “Holy Nation” in the Words to Know box in this YEA lesson. In your Bible notebook write how you can love and serve God. Share it with your family or Sabbath School class.

10. Talk to your family or Sabbath School class about how it would feel to be a royal priest of God. Share and discuss ideas.

11. Create an acrostic poem for A-T-T-I-T-U-D-E reminding you to serve God with gladness and not grumbling, because you are chosen.

NOTE: Acrostic poem: Each letter of a word begins a line of the poem; i.e. in a P-R-O-M-I-S-E acrostic poem, “P” starts the first line, “R” start the second line, “O” the third, etc.

12. Create a collage of all or part of Exodus 19:16-19. Use different materials and color tools. If possible have a trumpet, horn, or recording of one, when you share with family or Sabbath School class.

13. The trumpet blast had many different uses. Use a Bible dictionary or encyclopedia to find out more about the trumpet in Bible times. Write the information on the outline of a trumpet. Make the outline on a piece of card stock. Share it with family or Sabbath School class.

14. Write and perform a play of this YEA lesson. Include props and sound effects. Invite family and friends.

15. Sing: “Go Tell It On The Mountain” on page 61 of Kids Classics Collection; “ I Am Thine O Lord” on page 18 of the CEM Hymnal.

Culminating or On-going Activities

1. Create a newspaper or newsletter with headlines from each of the YEA lessons, or write your own. Each reporter should have their own story to write. Use pictures with each story. Make copies for each family member or Sabbath School student.

2. Design one mural for these ten lessons. Additions are made after each lesson. Hang the mural when completed. Invite others to your Exodus mural.

3. Ask students to create a game from the YEA lessons on the plagues. Provide simple materials and supplies. Students share and teach the games to each other. Store games in ziplock bags or small boxes.

4. Set up the classroom as a news station. Create call letters for your news station, for example BNN - Bible News Network or BNS - Bible News Station. Invite family and friends to hear the newscast of what happened during these ten YEA lessons. Divide the newscast into several parts: headline news, eyewitness/man on the street segment, weather report, sports, and the strange and unusual. Have someone videotape the newscast for the class to watch at a later date.

5. Write a thank you note to your Sabbath School teacher and/or your parents, telling them which lesson you liked best in On The Move and why.

Song

"I Will Sing Of The Mercies Of The Lord Forever” is on page 17 of Kids Classics Collection.

Closing Prayer

Ask if one of the children would like to lead in prayer, thanking God for choosing them to be a part of His holy nation. Ask God to help all the children to obey and serve God with all their hearts.
