The Law is Found

Words to Know

SCROLL - a long piece of paper with Bible verses written on it that is rolled up from each end

PASSOVER - the night when the Destroyer passed over Egypt and the Israelites were spared; also when Jesus died for our sins

The Lesson

Josiah was just a little eight year old boy. But he was king of Judah. The people had stopped obeying God's law. The Law of God had been lost. The Temple was rundown and in a mess. When King Josiah became a young man he gave orders for at the Temple to be repaired. Money was given so repairs could be made.

Hilkiah the High Priest was in the Temple one day and guess what? He found a scroll in the Temple. This was not just any scroll. It had God's Law written on it. He was so happy! He gave it to Shaphan, the secretary, to read it to the king. When the king heard the law read to him, he tore his clothes and cried because he was afraid. He had just learned that they had not been following God's Law.

God was about to destroy the nation and His people because they had stopped obeying Him. But because King Josiah was so sorry that he tore his clothes and cried, God said He would hear their prayer. He wouldn’t destroy their nation until after they were gone. So they got busy smashing all the idols that people had put in God's Temple.

As they read the scroll with God's Law on it, they learned about the Passover.

The king ordered the people to celebrate the Passover. It had been a long, long time since anyone had kept the Passover. It was a wonderful celebration with a roasted lamb and unleavened bread. The Passover should be kept every year.

Words to Know

ARK OF THE COVENANT - a gold-covered box where God's Law was kept

PROMISED LAND - the land east of the Jordan River God promised to the 12 tribes of Israel

UNLEAVENED BREAD - flat bread without yeast, baking powder, or baking soda

The Lesson

The night before Israel left Egypt, they kept the Passover. For 40 long years these people walked, and walked, and walked. They had their children, their clothes, and animals with them. God told them that there was a land that flowed with milk and honey. It was the Promised Land and He wanted His people to live there. They were almost there.

But there was a big river they had to cross before reaching the Promised Land. So God had to do a big miracle. The priests stepped into the river carrying the Ark of the Covenant. God caused the water in the Jordan River to stop flowing. It was as if a glass wall was holding back the water on both sides. Then the people walked across on dry ground to the other side. This is the land they had wanted to see for 40 long years. It was beautiful. The people were so happy. They were home at last!

Just as it was Passover time when Israel left Egypt, it was again time for the Passover. So the Israelites kept the Passover. Do you know what follows the Passover? The next day is the Feast of Unleavened Bread. It lasts for seven days. Can you count to seven? One-two-three-four-five-six-seven. Did you know that there are seven days in a week? So the Feast of Unleavened Bread lasts for a whole week. Before we start eating unleavened bread, we put all the leavening out of our houses. Do you know what leavening is? It's anything you put in bread to make it light and fluffy - yeast, baking powder, and baking soda.

Then for seven days we eat unleavened bread. Your mom may bake some really yummy things during the Days of Unleavened Bread. But why do we eat unleavened bread? We do it because our friend Jesus wants us to remember that He is the Bread of Life. He is more important than any bread we ever eat.

Cut the Grain

Leviticus 23:10-11
Leviticus 23:15-21
Leviticus 23:20

Acts 2:1-3

Words to Know

GRAIN - seeds that are often ground to make flour for bread

HARVEST - when crops of fruits, vegetables, and grain are gathered to eat

BUNDLE - many stalks of grain tied together

The Lesson

Today's story is about the Feast of Pentecost. Do you know what Pentecost means? It means count 50. Can you count all the way to 50? God told His people to count to 50 so they would know when to celebrate Pentecost. But what were they to count? They were to count 50 days. But when did they start counting these 50 days? They started counting 50 days from the Sabbath day during the Days of Unleavened Bread. Then what happened?

After the sun had set on the Sabbath day when they started counting, the priests and the people went out into a field of grain. They picked a stalks of grain and tied them into a bundle with string. Why did they do this? Because Pentecost is a harvest festival. Harvest means fruits, vegetables, or grain are ripe and ready to pick. God said people couldn't eat the grain until they presented this bundle to Him. We should always thank God for the food He gives us, before we eat it.

After the priests and people tied this bundle of grain, one of them asked these questions and the people answered "Yes!"

"Is the sun down?" The people shouted, "Yes!"

"This sheaf?" The people shouted, “Yes!"

"With this sickle?" The people said, "Yes!"

"Shall I reap?" (Reap means to cut it.) The people shouted, "Yes!"

That night, the priests took the grain off of the stalks and cooked it in a pan over a fire. Early the next morning it was given to God in the Temple. Then 50 days later they celebrated Pentecost like God wanted them to.

Blow the Trumpet

Memory Verse1 Thessalonians 4:16 - “The Lord will come down from heaven. We will hear a blast from God's trumpet" (paraphrase).

Scriptures

Leviticus 10:23-24
1 Thessalonians 4:16
Revelation 8:6-11
Revelation 11:15

Words to Know

TRUMPET - a horn that has a bell shape that can make a loud sound

The Lesson

Do you like to go to a parade? Have you seen a marching band playing music? Some people play the drums. Some play trumpets. Then one or two people play a great big tuba. Which one would you like to play?

There are many sounds to make on a trumpet. Soldiers in the army have several sounds they make on the trumpet. One sound tells them when it's time to get up in the morning. There is a sound that tells them when it's time to eat. Another sound tells them when it's time to go to bed. In the Bible the sound of the trumpet was used to warn people of danger. It also told them when to go to war and fight. When people heard the sound of the trumpet they knew something was going to happen.

In the Bible God said to blow the trumpet on the first day of every month. The seventh time the trumpet was blown, something very special was going to happen. It was time for the Feast of Trumpets. Everyone would want to know it was time to have a Feast. Feasts are fun!

Someday God will tell His angel to start blowing trumpets. The angel will blow one... two... three... four... five... and six trumpet sounds. Because people have done bad things, something bad will happen after each trumpet sounds. The Bible says when the last trumpet sounds, something really, really good is going to happen. Jesus is going to come from heaven to be with us on this earth. If we believe in Jesus and obey Him, we'll go up to the clouds to meet Him. Won't that be exciting? Then we'll come back to this earth and live with Him forever.

Words to Know

SIN - the bad things we do

The Lesson

Along time ago, Satan was a very beautiful angel. But he chose to be very bad. He thought he was better than God. So God threw him out of heaven. Since then, he's been trying to get everyone else to be bad like him. He tries to make us think that good is bad. He tries to make doing bad look fun and good. When we do wrong things, bad things happen. Satan causes many of the bad things that happen in our world. He is our enemy.

Sometimes when you do bad things, your mommy and daddy will let you get by without being punished. You may think you will never be punished. Then one day you do something really bad, and you get punished. Satan has gotten by without being punished for al the bad things he's doing. But God won't let him get by with this forever. One day Satan will be punished.

After our Friend Jesus returns to this earth, an angel will chain Satan in a bottomless pit for 1000 years. Then he won't be able to get anyone to do bad things. The Bible says we shouldn't be happy when our enemy falls (Proverbs 24:17).

God gave us a holy day to help us understand this. This holy day is the Day of Atonement. It is different from God's other holy days. We don't have a feast. We are to be sad that we've sinned and we should ask God to forgive us.

Jesus died for our sins on the Passover. That is another day that we are sorry for all the bad things we've done. But the Day of Atonement is different. It is a day when God will forgive our brothers, our sisters, our friends, and our nation for all the bad things that all of us have done.

We don't do any work on the Day of Atonement. We don't have a feast on the Day of Atonement. We go to church and ask God to forgive us for the bad things we've done.

A Happy Feast!

Memory VersePsalm 5:11 - “Make everyone rejoice who puts his trust in you" (TLB).

Scriptures

Leviticus 23:33, 34
Deuteronomy 16:13-14
Psalm 5:11
Isaiah 11:6-9
2 Corinthians 5:1
Revelation 20:6

Words to Know

TAME - won't hurt you

BOOTH - a house made from branches that won’t last

GRAZE- to eat grass

The Lesson

Do you love your home? It's where your mommy and daddy live. You have a nice soft bed that you sleep in every night. Your home has a kitchen where Mommy cooks good meals for you to eat. Your home has a bathroom and other rooms.

The people of Israel were slaves in Egypt. God told Moses and Aaron to go tell Pharaoh to "Let my people go." God did some miracles so that the Israelites could be freed. They left Egypt one night - they left their homes. They had to live in tents or homes made of tree limbs. Do you think they got wet when it rained? Do you think they would rather have lived in a home like you live in?

God told Moses to lead the Israelites to the Promised Land. But for 40 long years, they walked through the wilderness and lived in tents without a bathroom or kitchen. God says we should remember this at the Feast of Tabernacles every year. We leave our nice homes and live in a condo, motel, or tent. This helps us remember that Israel lived in tents or booths. It also helps us to remember that our bodies don’t last forever. We look for the Kingdom of God - our Promised Land - to come on this earth. It will last forever!

The Kingdom of God will be a happy place to live. There won't be any mean animals. Have you ever seen a dog and cat sleep together in the same bed or basket? In God's Kingdom, the wolf and the lamb will lie down together. Cows will graze with bears. The lion will eat grass like a cow. All animals will be tame in God's Kingdom. Nothing will hurt you. Everyone will know about God and our Friend Jesus. Think about this. It should make you have a Happy Feast!

Bright and Beautiful

Memory VerseRevelation 21:3 - “The Tabernacle of God is with men."

Scriptures

Leviticus 23:36
Isaiah 65:20

Revelation 20:13-14
Revelation 21:1-27
Revelation 21:3
Revelation 22:1-21

Words to Know

FOUNDATION - the bottom of a building that supports it

The Lesson

Have you seen places in your town that are old and ugly? Houses with windows broken and boards falling off are not pretty. A front porch with a lot of junk on it is not pretty either. Banged-up cars with wheels off are ugly too. God likes pretty things. When you see something that is ugly, it is because man, not God, has made it that way. Sin makes things ugly too.

When God created the earth, He made it beautiful. He planted the fields and put beautiful streams of water on the earth. He made flowers bloom and look beautiful. He told Adam and Eve to work the ground and take care of it. He wants us to take care of our houses and yards too.

Our Friend Jesus will return to this earth and set up His Kingdom. The world will become a wonderful place to live for 1000 years. Then God, Jesus’ Father, our Heavenly Father, will come down from heaven and bring a new heaven and a new earth. A beautiful river will flow from God's throne that will never run dry. No one will get sick. No one will fight. No one will cry. Everyone will love God, and they will love each other. What a wonderful place it will be!

The streets will be pure gold. The New Jerusalem will have 12 gates made of pearls. God, sitting on His throne, will give off so much light that we won't need the sun or moon. We won't need street lights. You won't need a lamp in your room. God will fix everything that is broken. Everything will be Bright and Beautiful.

God will bring your reward from heaven with Him. If you have been really good, kept God's commandments, and helped a lot of people, then God will give you your reward. Do you want Him to give you a city to rule over? On the Last Great Day, think about how Bright and Beautiful the new heaven and new earth will be.

One God

Memory VerseDeuteronomy 12:30 - “Don't say, how do these nations serve their gods?"

Scriptures

Deuteronomy 4:2
Deuteronomy 5:6-7
Deuteronomy 12:28-32
Deuteronomy 12:30
Jeremiah 44:15-26

The Lesson

Do you remember what the First Commandment says? It says, "Do not put any other gods in place of me" (Exodus 2:3 NIrV Kids'Devotional Bible). This commandment is so important that God put it first. People in Egypt worshipped other gods. They worshipped gods made of wood and stone. Sometimes their god was a woman and sometimes it was a man. Their god couldn't answer their prayers. It couldn’t help them when they were in trouble. It couldn't give them food when they were hungry. But the True God can.

Do you remember that God gave the Israelites manna and quail to eat while they were in the wilderness? He parted the Red Sea so they could walk across on dry land. Our God is awesome!

God said, "I want you to worship me just like I tell you. There is a right way to worship me and there is a wrong way to worship me. Don't worship me like the Egyptians worshipped their gods. Don't worship me like other nations worship their gods.”

How did the Egyptians and other nations worship their gods? Instead of keeping the Passover and the Days of Unleavened Bread, they worshipped a goddess named Easter. They baked cakes for Easter, the Queen of Heaven. That made God angry.

Just as many people do today, they hid Easter eggs in the grass for their children to find. This was fun, but it's not what God wants us to do. They told their children that bunny rabbits laid the eggs. But we know rabbits don't lay eggs. Ducks, chickens, birds, turkeys, and geese lay eggs. So what they told their children was not true. God wants us to always tell the truth. The Ninth Commandment says we are not to lie. God wants you to be honest and not worship other gods or goddesses like Easter.

Words to Know

SKELETON - bones of a dead person or animal

The Lesson

Maria dressed up to look like a witch and went trick or treating on Halloween night. She came home with a bag of candy. Mommy said it was time for Marie to go to bed. Mommy tucked Maria in bed, gave her a kiss, and said goodnight. Soon Maria woke up screaming, "Mommy, Mommy, Mommy, a witch is chasing me.” Mommy ran to Maria's bed, and held her in her arms. "I'm here, Maria, don't be afraid. There's no witch chasing you. You're safe." Mommy told Maria that she didn't want her to ever go trick or treating again because it made our Friend Jesus sad. Jesus never went trick or treating.

Maria asked Mommy why Jesus never went trick or treating. When you go trick or treating you are saying, "If you don't treat me, l'll do something bad to you." That is not a nice thing to do. We don't say things like that to other people. We ask nicely if we want them to do something for us. We always say, “please." Jesus says we are happier when we give to someone else than when we get something from another person.

Some children may dress up like witches, skeletons of dead bones, black cats, or spooks on Halloween. They don't look pretty, do they?

God created the earth to be beautiful. Look at all the shining stars in the sky. See the beautiful flowers, the furry kittens, red birds, blue birds, and yellow birds that sing, squirrels that jump from tree to tree. These things are beautiful. God wants us to like beautiful things. He doesn't want us to think about ugly, scary things. And He doesn't want us to celebrate Halloween or go trick or treating. Here’s what He wants: Whatever is lovely. . . think about such things.

Words to Know

REINDEER - a deer

SLEIGH - a horse-drawn vehicle with runners for use on snow or ice

The Lesson

Karie was walking in the mall with her Mommy one winter day. There was a fat man in a red suit with a long white beard sitting by a tree that had lights all over it. Karie asked Mommy, "Who is that man?" Mommy told Karie that he was just a man dressed up in a red suit to look like Santa Claus.

Karie asked, "Who is Santa Claus, Mommy?" Mommy said, "Santa Claus isn't a real person. People say that he rides in a sleigh, pulled by reindeer. People say he goes through the air like an airplane and lands on roofs of houses the night before Christmas. Then people say this fat man goes down the chimneys of houses with his big pack on his back and leaves Christmas presents for children who have been good. People think Christmas is Jesus' birthday."

Karie said, "But Mommy, I've been good and Santa Claus has never come to our house with presents. Is our house too high for Santa Claus to fly up to our roof, or is he afraid of getting burned in our chimney?"

Mommy said. "Deer don't fly; they walk and run. And there is no way they could get on the roof of anyone’s house. Santa Claus is not a real person and Jesus was not born on Christmas. These are made-up stories."

"Then why do people say these things?" Karie asked. Mommy said, "What people say about Santa Claus is not true. And God always wants us to tell the truth. The things people say about Santa Claus make him sound better than God. We know that the First Commandment tells us not to do that. Believing in Santa Claus makes God very sad. He is the one who gives us everything.”

Jesus wasn't born on Christmas. It's not His birthday. He was born in the autumn and probably on the first night of the Feast of Tabernacles. God wants us to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles and not Christmas. The Feast of Tabernacles is all truth with no lies. It puts God first in our lives.
