Words to Know

SIN - the bad things we do

The Lesson

Along time ago, Satan was a very beautiful angel. But he chose to be very bad. He thought he was better than God. So God threw him out of heaven. Since then, he's been trying to get everyone else to be bad like him. He tries to make us think that good is bad. He tries to make doing bad look fun and good. When we do wrong things, bad things happen. Satan causes many of the bad things that happen in our world. He is our enemy.

Sometimes when you do bad things, your mommy and daddy will let you get by without being punished. You may think you will never be punished. Then one day you do something really bad, and you get punished. Satan has gotten by without being punished for al the bad things he's doing. But God won't let him get by with this forever. One day Satan will be punished.

After our Friend Jesus returns to this earth, an angel will chain Satan in a bottomless pit for 1000 years. Then he won't be able to get anyone to do bad things. The Bible says we shouldn't be happy when our enemy falls (Proverbs 24:17).

God gave us a holy day to help us understand this. This holy day is the Day of Atonement. It is different from God's other holy days. We don't have a feast. We are to be sad that we've sinned and we should ask God to forgive us.

Jesus died for our sins on the Passover. That is another day that we are sorry for all the bad things we've done. But the Day of Atonement is different. It is a day when God will forgive our brothers, our sisters, our friends, and our nation for all the bad things that all of us have done.

We don't do any work on the Day of Atonement. We don't have a feast on the Day of Atonement. We go to church and ask God to forgive us for the bad things we've done.

Preparation

A teacher may look upon the Day of Atonement as the most difficult lesson of the year to teach, especially for this age group. Keep in mind that children can only grasp and retain so much from one lesson. YEA has not tried to cover every aspect of this subject. YEA students will have 17 years to gain knowledge of this day from each successive lesson. Beginners are likely to have little knowledge of Satan. This lesson may be their introduction to him.

Children this age are not likely to do a complete fast. If parents are having their child fast for part of the day, be sensitive to that. Keeping the child’s mind occupied in an interesting way, and off his desire for food, will help. Rather than telling the story first, begin with a game to create action and involve the children.

When planning for the activity, either have the majority of the cutting and assembling done prior to class, or find some extra helpers for completing this activity.

Have the children form a circle and hold hands. Begin with yourself and tell one thing you are asking forgiveness for. Then let each child add one thing for himself/herself. Lead in prayer thanking God for the Day of Atonement, that He has provided a way to free all of us from sin and reconcile all of us to Himself through the blood of Jesus Christ.
