SCROLL - a long piece of paper with Bible verses written on it that is rolled up from each end
PASSOVER - the night when the Destroyer passed over Egypt and the Israelites were spared; also when Jesus died for our sins
Josiah was just a little eight year old boy. But he was king of Judah. The people had stopped obeying God's law. The Law of God had been lost. The Temple was rundown and in a mess. When King Josiah became a young man he gave orders for at the Temple to be repaired. Money was given so repairs could be made.
Hilkiah the High Priest was in the Temple one day and guess what? He found a scroll in the Temple. This was not just any scroll. It had God's Law written on it. He was so happy! He gave it to Shaphan, the secretary, to read it to the king. When the king heard the law read to him, he tore his clothes and cried because he was afraid. He had just learned that they had not been following God's Law.
God was about to destroy the nation and His people because they had stopped obeying Him. But because King Josiah was so sorry that he tore his clothes and cried, God said He would hear their prayer. He wouldn’t destroy their nation until after they were gone. So they got busy smashing all the idols that people had put in God's Temple.
As they read the scroll with God's Law on it, they learned about the Passover.
The king ordered the people to celebrate the Passover. It had been a long, long time since anyone had kept the Passover. It was a wonderful celebration with a roasted lamb and unleavened bread. The Passover should be kept every year.

Bible, YEA Students and Teacher's books, attendance and memory verse charts, stars, music player and CD or tape, large appliance box, tempera paint, sponge, paper, dowels (two for every student, plus two for you), paper, glue, old boxes, trash, junk, craft sticks
Children should never remember a time when they did not keep the holy days of God. Each year YEA builds on previous lessons having to do with each holy day to give a more complete picture for children to understand. The holy days are like a thread that runs through the entire Bible, helping us to understand God's plan. We should never deprive our children of this understanding or there will be consequences to pay, as there were in Josiah's day.
Before class, make a large cardboard appliance box resemble the Temple. Shape it so there is the door at the front and two sides. Sponge it with tempera paint to make it look as though it is made of stone. It can be placed in a corner of the room. Also, make one scroll for the Activity. Write today's memory verse on it and copy the memory verse on enough papers to be glued to the dowels for each child to have one. Leave your scroll in the "Temple" you built. Put a lot of junky-looking things in it such as old newspapers, broken toys, dishes, etc.
If there will be more than two weeks between lessons being taught, take up the Students' books after class and hand them out the week before the next lesson is taught.
1. Who can tell us what a scroll is? A long piece of paper with Bible verses written on it, that is rolled up from each end.
2. What did Hilkiah, the High Priest, find in the Scroll?
3. What did Israel eat at the Passover?
4. Have students recite their memory verse.

Lead the children in prayer, thanking God that the scroll with God's Law on it was found so they knew about the Passover. Ask that God will always help them to remember the Passover and His Law.
