The Lesson

Summer was over and it was beginning to get cooler. God had something He wanted to tell Moses. He said, “I want my people to celebrate another feast day. You are to celebrate it on the first day of the seventh month.” If you look up in the sky on that night you will see a tiny moon that looks like a slice of orange. This is called a “new moon.” When you see that slice of orange in the sky, you will know it is the first day of the month. And God said, “that is when I want you to celebrate the Feast of Trumpets.”

God had told His people to blow a trumpet on the first day of every month. The Feast of Trumpets is on the first day of the seventh month. And God said to blow a trumpet that day. A trumpet blast can be very loud. People could hear it a long way off. So when they heard the trumpet blast on the first day of the seventh month, they knew it was time to celebrate the Feast of Trumpets.

The Feast of Trumpets is a very special celebration. We don’t work on that day. We go to church to learn more about God and His feast day. We get to sing a lot of songs to praise God. We have a special meal that we may call a “potluck.” And we eat a lot of really good food.

Some day the trumpet will make a very loud sound and our Friend Jesus will come back to this earth! Won’t that be a wonderful day? Do you think He will come back on the Feast of Trumpets?

Materials Needed

Bible, YEA students’ and teacher’s books, music player and CD or tapes, trumpet (if possible), yellow construction paper, crayons, stapler or tape, stickers

Preparation

Listening is a skill which is developed through practice. For some children, listening is hard work. Help these children learn to listen by using visuals and storytelling techniques which also show your love of God’s Word.

The trumpet was used in the Old Testament to gain the people’s attention when an important announcement was to be made, when they were going to battle, on important occasions, and as a warning. The sound of the trumpet was a call to listen.

If possible, have someone come to your class to demonstrate what a modern day trumpet looks and sounds like.

Before you come to class, make a cone shaped trumpet out of yellow construction paper, or have a real trumpet available to use.

Review Questions

1. What are three things that a trumpet sound told the people?

2. When do we celebrate the Feast of Trumpets?

3. One day everyone will hear a loud trumpet sound. What will that trumpet tell us?

4. What are some things we do to celebrate the Feast of Trumpets?
