GOD’S HOUSE - the Tabernacle or Temple, something like a church building
Samuel went to live in God’s house when he was a little boy. He helped Eli the priest. Eli was getting old and he had trouble seeing. Maybe Samuel shined the golden lamp stand or kept the lamps filled with oil. Or maybe he opened the doors early in the morning. At night Samuel slept in his bed at God’s house.
One night a voice woke Samuel out of his sleep. Samuel listened. The voice called, “Samuel, Samuel.” Samuel got up. He went to Eli’s room. Eli was still asleep.
“Did you call me?” Samuel asked. But Eli said no. He told Samuel to go back to bed. The voice woke Samuel again. It woke him three times. Who do you think was calling him?
Each time Samuel went to Eli, but the priest said Samuel must be dreaming. The last time Samuel went to Eli the priest said it must be God talking. Eli said, “The next time you hear the voice say, ‘Here I am, Lord.’”
God told Samuel something very important. Eli’s sons were doing bad things. God was going to punish them. He told this to Samuel because He knew Samuel would listen. Samuel loved God.
God knows His children who love Him. He knows your name. He knows who your mommy and daddy are. He even knows how many hairs are on your head! God talks to you when you read His Word, the Bible. Do you do what He tells you, like Samuel did?

“Informal movement activities are easy for a teacher to handle. They require no advance preparations. They provide large muscle movement and kinesthetic learning, as well as helping children form mental images of the actions” (Teaching Preschoolers by Ruth Beechick).
In today’s lesson you will encourage the children to follow your actions as you tell the story of Samuel.
To teach or review the memory verse, have the children do the following ASL motions (https://www.signasl.org): “But those who love (draw a heart on their chest with their fingers) God (ASL sign for God: “B” hand moved vertically downward from head level to chest level - “Self-existent One) are known (right finger point to their head by temple) by God (ASL sign for God: “B” hand moved vertically downward from head level to chest level - “Self-existent One).” That means that God knows His children who love Him. He knows your name. He knows who your mommy and daddy are. He even knows how many hairs are on your head!
Have Tiny the Mouse ask the questions.
1. Why was Samuel living in God’s house?
2. What woke Samuel up in the middle of the night?
3. Who did Samuel think was calling him?
4. What did Eli tell Samuel to say when he heard the voice again?
5. Does God talk to you today? How?
Tell the children that this is a Listening Game. Have them line up against the wall. Call out a child’s name. They must step forward and answer, “Here I Am!” Then instruct the child to do something (put your hands on your head, touch your toes, turn in circles, etc.). Only the child whose name is called should answer and do the action. Continue until all the children have been called. If the child fails to answer, “Here I Am!” he must step back against the wall.

Lead the children in prayer, thanking God for giving Samuel such an important message, even though he was a young boy. Thank God for talking to us in His Word. Ask God to help the children to listen and obey what God tells us:
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for loving me and talking to me in Your Word. Help me be like Samuel and listen and obey You.
In Jesus’ name.
Amen.
