Do Right!

Memory VerseDeuteronomy 6:18a - “Do what is right and good in the Lord’s eyes” (NIrV)

Scriptures

Exodus 19:7-8
Deuteronomy 6:18
Deuteronomy 12:28
1 Kings 3:7-9
Psalm 25:4-5
Proverbs 29:18
Ecclesiastes 12:13
Acts 4:19
James 1:5

Words to Know

Stone Tablets - flat pieces of rock used to write on instead of paper

The Lesson

Doing the right thing is not always easy. Sometimes we just have to make a choice. Do you want ice cream or spinach? Do you want to take a nap or play with your friends? We want to eat what tastes best. We want to do what is fun.

But, sometimes it’s very hard to make the right choice. Should you tell Mommy that you broke her flower pot or not? Is it okay to tell a lie? Should you hate someone who is mean to you?

The Israelites camped at Mt. Sinai. God promised them they would be His special people if they obeyed Him. And the people said, “We will do what you say.”

But, what did God want the Israelites to do? How would they know what was right and what was wrong? God wants His people to know what is right. So, He gave them some rules to live by. They are the Ten Commandments. Keeping these rules would make them happy.

Moses climbed up the mountain. God covered the mountain with a thick
cloud. He spoke to Moses. But it sounded like thunder and lightning to the Israelites. Then God wrote His Ten Commandments on stone tablets. They told the people what was right and wrong. They helped the Israelites make choices that would make them happy.

God’s commandments are for our good. When you obey them you also make God happy. This is “right and good in the Lord’s eyes.” Make the choice to Do Right! Be happy and make God happy. Obey God’s commandments.

Deuteronomy 6:4
Deuteronomy 6:5
Mark 12:28-30

1 Corinthians 8:6

1 Timothy 2:5

Words to Know

CHAMPION - the first place winner in competition

STATUE - likeness of a person or animal carved from stone, wood, or metal

The Lesson

The football game was over. Everyone was shouting, “We’re #1, we’re #1!” They were happy. Their team had won the game. They were the champions.

When we say something or someone is #1, we mean they are the best! No one can be better than the very best. There is only one very best.

Our God is the one and only God. He is #1! There is no one like Him. No one else can make an ocean out of nothing. No one else can make a person out of dust. There is no one else as strong as God. No one is as smart as God. No one else can do the great things God can do. And, no one else loves you as much as God does.

The very first commandment God gave Moses is the most important commandment. It says we should love God more than anything else. We should love Him with all of our hearts. We shouldn’t pray to anyone except the God in heaven. God doesn’t want us to worship false gods. We shouldn’t make statues to bow down to and worship. God wants us to worship only Him.

God made our world and everything in it. He even made you. He gives you everything you need. God wants you to be happy. And He wants you to love and worship Him. After all, He is #1! You don’t want to worship someone who is not the best!

What’s in a Name?

Memory VerseDeuteronomy 5:11 - “Do not misuse the name of the Lord your God.”(NIrV).

Scriptures

Exodus 20:7
Leviticus 24:15
Deuteronomy 5:11
Psalm 8:1-2
Psalm 34:3
Psalm 148:13
Proverbs 18:10
Acts 2:21

Words to Know

FAMOUS - someone who is well known

MISUSE - to use in a bad way

PRAISE - to honor with our words or songs

The Lesson

What is your name? Mommy and Daddy thought a lot about what to name you. Maybe you have the same name as your daddy. Or maybe you were named after someone famous. Your parents wanted your name to be special because you are special.

But, what if people shouted your name every time they got mad? What if your daddy hit his thumb with a hammer and he yelled your name Wouldn’t you feel badly? You might even think they were blaming you! God must feel that way at times. That’s how people treat His name.

God’s third commandment says we should not misuse God’s name. His name is very special. We should treat it very carefully. God even says that He will punish people who use His name in the wrong way.

The right way to use God’s name is when we pray. He wants us to talk to Him and call Him by name. Singing songs about God is another good way to use His name. God likes to hear us say good things about Him. These things make God happy.

Telling others about God is also a good way to use His name. Some people do not know who God is. They don’t know about His Son, Jesus. It is good to tell them God loves them. He sent Jesus to die for the bad things people do. God wants us to believe Him, trust Him, and pray in the name of Jesus. He will forgive the bad things we do. God wants everyone to live with Him forever in His Kingdom.

The Sabbath Day

Memory VerseExodus 31:14 - “Keep the Sabbath day. It is holy to you” (NIrV).

Scriptures

Exodus 20:8-11
Exodus 31:14
Exodus 31:15-16
Exodus 35:2
Deuteronomy 5:12-15
Isaiah 56:1-2
Jeremiah 17:21-22
Mark 2:23-3:4
Mark 6:2
Luke 4:16

Words to Know

HOLY - spiritually pure, dedicated to religious service

The Lesson

In the beginning of time, God made the first man. God knew what that man needed. He needed food, air, water, and a place to live. God gave the man a beautiful place to live. He gave him work to do. The man gave names to all the animals.

He took care of the beautiful garden. But, God knew the man needed something else. He needed a time to rest. God rested from creating on the seventh day. He wanted to show the man how to keep the Sabbath.

You and I still need a time to rest. We go to bed at night to sleep and rest. But that is not enough. So, God gave one day each week for us to rest. The Sabbath is the seventh day.

But God told us to do more than just rest on the Sabbath. He wants us to keep it holy – that means it is a day for us to do good things. We go to church and worship God on the Sabbath. We learn about Him from the Bible. We talk to Him about things that are important to us. And we thank Him for all the good things He gives us. Those are all good things to do.

There are also good things you can do for other people. You can give someone a smile. You can make a card for someone who is sick. And you can ask a friend to go with you to Sabbath School.

Remember, the Sabbath day was made by God for you. And the fourth commandment tells you keep it holy.

Honor Father and Mother

Memory VerseExodus 20:12 - “Honor your father and mother. Then you will have a long life” (Paraphrase).

Proverbs 4:3-4
Matthew 15:4
Ephesians 6:1-3

2 Timothy 2:5
2 Timothy 3:1-2

Words to Know

HONOR - to highly regard, to respect, to demonstrate love by making them happy

PREACHER - one who gives a religious message or sermon

The Lesson

Timothy was a young preacher. He told many people about Jesus. God was using him even though he was young. Timothy and the Apostle Paul were good friends. Paul was a very famous preacher.

Paul was much older than Timothy. He was very thankful for and proud of young Timothy. He wanted to help Timothy be a good Minister. So, Paul told Timothy that there were people who didn’t love Jesus.

But Timothy had two good teachers even before he met Paul. Timothy’s mother and grandmother loved God. They taught Timothy God’s laws when he was just a boy. They showed him how to live and make God happy.

Timothy didn’t forget what his mother and grandmother taught him. He obeyed what his mother and grandmother taught him. And, it brought honor to his mother and grandmother. They were happy and proud of him. It also made God very happy. Paul could see Timothy’s mother and grandmother were good teachers.

It makes Mommy happy when you tell her, “I love you.” God likes to hear that, too. Mommies and Daddies like the gifts you give them. But, the greatest gift you could give is to obey. God wants everyone to obey and do what is right. That is one way to show that you love someone. Doing what is right honors your parents. It is even better than giving them a gift!

Do Not Murder

Memory VerseMatthew 5:44 - “Love your enemies. Pray for those who hurt you” (NIrV).

1 Samuel 24:1-12
Matthew 5:21-22
Matthew 5:44
Mark 10:19
John 7:1
Romans 13:10
James 2:10-11

Words to Know

ENEMIES - one who hates and wishes to hurt another

JEALOUS - resentfully envious

The Lesson

David was a young man who loved God. He was a brave soldier in King Saul’s army. But, Saul was jealous of David. He knew one day David would be a great king.

King Saul didn’t like it when the people praised David. It made him mad. One day Saul threw his spear and tried to kill David. But, David got away. Saul sent spies to find David and kill him. But David escaped again. Whenever people said good things about David, Saul tried to kill him.

One day David and his men were hiding in a cave. Saul didn’t know David was in there. He went into that same cave. David’s men said, “This is your chance. You can kill Saul while he isn’t looking!”

But, David didn’t just love God – he loved God’s commandments. The sixth commandment says, “Do not murder.” David knew it would be wrong to kill Saul. Instead, David just cut off a piece of Saul’s robe. Later he showed it to Saul. David said, “See, I had a chance to kill you. But, I didn’t. I knew that was wrong.”

God made men and women to be like Him. He loves us all. Killing someone is taking a life that belongs to God. That is why God says you should, “Love your enemies. Pray for those who hurt you.” God wants everyone to have a chance to be with Him in His Kingdom.

John 2:1-2
Ephesians 5:22
Ephesians 5:25
Colossians 3:18-19

Hebrews 13:4

Words to Know

BRIDE - a woman who is getting married

GROOM - a man who is getting married

HONOR - respect, doing what is right

The Lesson

God made the first man, Adam. He gave him a perfect place to live. He had plenty of food to eat. There were animals to keep him company. But God said it wasn’t good for Adam to be alone. So God took one of Adam’s ribs and made Eve. Adam really liked the woman that God made. She was part of him. God told them to have children and make a home. This was the very first wedding.

The very first miracle Jesus did was at a wedding. The bride was beautiful. She wore a special dress. The groom was all dressed up, too. This was an important time. Everything was perfect. The bride and groom promised to stay with each other and love each other. They were starting a home.

It was God’s idea that men and women should get married. He said they should love each other. He told them to have children. And God wants mommies and daddies to take care of their children.

Weddings are beautiful. They usually have flowers and music. The bride and groom stand in front of the minister. But the most important part is the promise they make. They promise God to love and honor each other for life. And, God wants them to keep that promise, just like He keeps His promise to always love us!

Matthew 19:18
Luke 10:30
John 10:10
1 Corinthians 6:9-10
Ephesians 4:28

Words to Know

INSISTED - to declare firmly

The Lesson

Jerry and Pete went to the store with their mommy. They walked up and down the aisles of groceries. Cans of soup and vegetables were on the shelves. Cereal boxes were stacked in one aisle. They saw cookies and crackers of every kind. Pete and Jerry were getting hungry.

Finally mommy came to the fresh fruits and vegetables. She picked up a melon and sniffed. She put some oranges in a bag. They walked past a basket filled with juicy looking grapes. Jerry whispered to Pete, “No one would miss them if I ate a few. Tell me if you see someone watching.” Jerry pulled a few grapes and put them in his pocket.

Pete tapped Jerry on the shoulder. “Someone sees you,” Pete said.

Jerry looked around. He didn’t see anyone. He popped a grape into his mouth.

“Someone’s watching,” insisted Pete.

But again, Jerry didn’t see anyone near them.

As Jerry started to pick another grape, Pete said, “Someone sees you.”

Jerry looked behind him. He looked down the aisle. Mommy was busy putting tomatoes in her basket. There was no one else around. “What do you mean, someone sees me?”

Pete answered, “God sees you from above.”

Taking grapes from the store without paying is stealing. And stealing makes God sad. He wants you to give and share with others, not to steal. Giving and sharing makes God happy.

Be Honest

Memory VerseEphesians 4:25 - “Stop lying to each other; tell the truth. . .” (Living Bible).

Scriptures

Exodus 20:16
Psalm 19:9
Psalm 119:160
Proverbs 8:6-7
Mark 14:43-65
Ephesians 4:25
Philippians 4:8
James 3:6
1 John 2:21-27

Words to Know

HONEST - truthful

The Lesson

Jesus stood before the judge. He was taken to jail for something He didn’t do. We know that Jesus never did anything bad. But some people didn’t like Jesus. They lied to the judge. They didn’t want the judge to let Jesus go free. When you tell lies, something bad usually happens. Jesus was put to death.

Brenda was playing dress-up. Mommy let her wear one of her dresses. She had on Mommy’s red shoes and a hat. Brenda went in Mommy’s room to look in the mirror. On the dresser she saw Mommy’s makeup. Brenda thought it would be fun to put on a little makeup. She even put some on the cat.

Later, Mommy went into her bedroom. She started to open the dresser drawer. There was powder all over the dresser. The lid was off her favorite lipstick. Her eye makeup was on the floor.

Mommy called Brenda. She asked if Brenda had been in her makeup. But, Brenda wasn’t honest. She didn’t tell the truth. She pointed
to the cat. Brenda said, “Look Mommy. The cat must have made the mess.”

Brenda lied to keep out of trouble. But, Mommy knew the truth. God wants you to always tell the truth. His ninth commandment says, “Do not tell lies.” But, sometimes we all do things we shouldn’t. You should tell God you are sorry for the wrong things you do, like telling lies. He will forgive you.

Do Not Envy

Memory Verse1 Corinthians 13:4 - “Love is kind. It does not want what belongs to others” (NIrV).

Proverbs 27:4
Romans 1:28-29

Philippians 4:6
1 Timothy 6:10
James 4:1-2

Words to Know

ENVY - to desire something that belongs to someone else

POUT - to stick out your lip when you don’t get what you want

The Lesson

Ahab was a king over Israel. He lived in a beautiful palace. Ahab had lots of nice things. But, he wasn’t a good king. He did things he shouldn’t do.

Naboth was a farmer. His farm was near the palace. The farm had been in Naboth’s family for a long, long time. Naboth grew grapes on his farm. His daddy and granddaddy grew grapes there before him.

One day King Ahab looked out at Naboth’s farm. He saw it was a good farm. It was very close to his palace. Ahab wanted Naboth’s farm for his own. He wanted to plant a garden there. Ahab told Naboth he wanted to buy his farm. He said he would give Naboth money for the farm. But, Naboth said, “No way!” He didn’t want to sell it.

King Ahab was very angry. He went home and wouldn’t eat anything. He acted like a spoiled brat. Ahab went to his room and pouted. He told his wife, Jezebel, that Naboth wouldn’t sell his farm.

Then Jezebel did a terrible thing. She found two bad men to cause trouble. They told lies about Naboth. The people of the city believed the lies. They took Naboth out of the city and threw stones at him until he was dead.

Ahab was greedy and envied what Naboth had. Envy causes people to do bad things. God wants us to be happy with what we have. He wants us to obey His commands.
