The Lesson

In the beginning of time, God made the first man. God knew what that man needed. He needed food, air, water, and a place to live. God gave the man a beautiful place to live. He gave him work to do. The man gave names to all the animals.

He took care of the beautiful garden. But, God knew the man needed something else. He needed a time to rest. God rested from creating on the seventh day. He wanted to show the man how to keep the Sabbath.

You and I still need a time to rest. We go to bed at night to sleep and rest. But that is not enough. So, God gave one day each week for us to rest. The Sabbath is the seventh day.

But God told us to do more than just rest on the Sabbath. He wants us to keep it holy – that means it is a day for us to do good things. We go to church and worship God on the Sabbath. We learn about Him from the Bible. We talk to Him about things that are important to us. And we thank Him for all the good things He gives us. Those are all good things to do.

There are also good things you can do for other people. You can give someone a smile. You can make a card for someone who is sick. And you can ask a friend to go with you to Sabbath School.

Remember, the Sabbath day was made by God for you. And the fourth commandment tells you keep it holy.

Preparation

The Ten Commandments are God’s guide to living a life pleasing to Him. The first four commandments teach us how to have a right relationship with God. Acknowledging God as the only true God, worshiping Him and Him only, honoring His holy name, and keeping the Sabbath as a day of rest and worship will not only please God, but will also make us happy.

On the seventh day of creation, God rested – but not because He was tired. He had His crown of creation, man, in mind when He set the Sabbath aside as a day of rest. God supplied everything His creation needed, including a day of rest.

As parents and teachers we are given the responsibility not only of teaching children to memorize the Ten Commandments, but also to help them identify practical ways they can keep and obey them.

Fold construction paper in half forming cards. You will need one for each child. Copy the following verse onto construction paper. (Note: You may need a couple of extra volunteers to help with the activity during class.)

God, Before I call you, you’re already there. You know what I need, and I know that you care.

Use the puppet to greet the children. He can listen to them recite their memory verse and ask the review questions.

Review Questions

(Use the puppet to ask the following questions.)

1. Why do trees lose their leaves in the fall?

2. What did God do on the seventh day of creation?

3. Why did God tell us to rest on the Sabbath?

4. What are some good things you can do on the Sabbath?

Teacher-Directed Activity

Give each child a sheet of colored construction paper folded with the verse printed on it. Allow the children to decorate the front of the card by gluing silk flowers, pictures cut from used greet- ing cards, stickers, glitter, or any combination of items. Help them to sign their name inside the card. Tell them to give the card to someone who has been sick, to a grandparent, or to someone they would like to invite to Sabbath School.
