Words to Know

IDOL - a statue or image of a person or animal used for worship

PHARAOH - the king of Egypt

WORSHIP - what we do and say to honor the Lord

The Lesson

God's people were the Israelites. They moved to Egypt many years ago. They went there because there wasn't enough food where they lived. God blessed the Israelites in Egypt. Their families grew big. They had many sheep and cattle. But Pharaoh was afraid there would be more Israelites than Egyptians. So, he made the Israelites work very hard for him.

God saw how hard Pharaoh made His people work and He didn't like it. God loved His people. And, He wanted the Israelites to love and worship Him. So, God chose a man named Moses to help the Israelites.

One day God called to Moses in the desert. God's voice came from a bush that was on fire. He told Moses to go to Egypt and speak to Pharaoh. But, Moses said he wasn't good at talking. So God sent Moses brother, Aaron, to speak for him. This is what God told Moses and Aaron to say: "Let my people go so they can worship me. I want them to hold a feast for me in the desert."

Pharaoh didn't want to let the Israelites go. He said, "Who is this God? And, why should I obey Him?" The Egyptians didn't worship the true God. They worshiped idols that were made by men and they prayed to them. Pharaoh didn't even know who the true God was.

The Lord God is the only true God. He made the heavens, the earth and everything in them. The Israelites believed and worshiped the true God. The Lord our God loves His people. He took care of the Israelites. and He will take care of you.

Words to Know

STUBBORN - refused to do what God told him

LICE - tiny bugs that live in the hair and on the body of people, biting them

The Lesson

Moses and Aaron told Pharaoh to let God's people go. God wanted His people to go into the desert so they could worship Him. But, Pharaoh said, “NO!" He was a very stubborn man. He wouldn't listen and obey God. So God sent some bad things to get Pharaoh's attention.

First, all the water in Egypt turned into blood. There was no water for the people to drink. The water in the rivers and lakes turned to blood. Then all the fish began to die. It was a very stinky mess! But Pharaoh wouldn't let God's people go.

One morning the Egyptians wakened to a funny sound. Ribbit, ribbit! Frogs were in their houses. They were in their ovens and on the dishes. They were in their clothes and in their beds. Frogs were even in their food!

Pharaoh got mad, but he wouldn't let God's people go. Then God sent all kinds of bugs to the people of Egypt. Flies buzzed and bit them. Lice were all over their bodies. They made the people itch and scratch. He even sent big grasshoppers that ate the leaves off all the plants and trees. But Pharaoh was still stubborn.

The Egyptians' animals got sick and died. They had big sores all over their bodies. There was no medicine to make them feel better. Then God sent big balls of hail from the sky. They fell on the animals and people. There was even fire with the hail. Then God made it dark for three whole days. But Pharaoh still said. "NO!"

DESTROYER - from God to bring death to the first born

PROTECT- keep from danger

The Lesson

Moses and Aaron told Pharaoh that God said, "Let my people go into the desert to worship me.” But Pharaoh was stubborn; he said, "NO!" Even after God sent blood for water, frogs, bugs, hail, sickness, and darkness, Pharaoh still wouldn't let God's people go. So, God had one more thing to send to the Egyptians.

God told Moses to have the Israelites get ready. The last thing He would send was very bad. God would send His destroyer into Egypt. In one night the first born child in every family would die. The first born animals would also die.

But, God told the Israelites that He would protect them from the destroyer, if they did what Moses told them to do. Moses said to take the blood of a lamb and paint it above their doors and on the sides of them. If they obeyed, they would be safe.

That night in Egypt many mothers cried. Their oldest child had died. They were very sad. The Israelites heard the crying. They knew that the destroyer had come.

All the Israelite children were safe in their houses. Do you know why? Because they obeyed God and did what He told them. They had put the blood over their doors. And when the destroyer saw the blood, it passed by.

God loved the Israelites. They were His people. So, a little lamb had to die to save the Israelite children alive. God loves you, too. He sent His Son, Jesus, to die so that you could live with Him forever in His Kingdom. God called Jesus His Lamb. But, you must do what God tells you to do, just like the Israelites.

Words to Know

MIGHTY - strong

The Lesson

What a terrible night that was. The destroyer passed through Egypt. In every house the first born child and animal were dead. Egyptian mothers were crying. God did what He said He would do.

God told the Israelites they must get ready to go. He also said that they had to cook a special Passover meal and eat it with unleavened bread. God said they should have their walking shoes and traveling clothes on when they ate this meal. They were to be ready to leave in a hurry.

When the destroyer passed over, Pharaoh heard the Egyptians crying. He was very sad, but he was also angry. Even his son had died. Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron to come see him that very night. He told them to take the flocks and herds and all the people and leave Egypt - right now! The Egyptian people gave the Israelites clothes and gold and silver jewelry. They took their flocks of sheep and herds of cattle and left Egypt at night.

The Israelites had been slaves in Egypt for 430 years! That's a long, long time. At last, all of God's people were free to leave Egypt. They left with their children and their sheep and cows. That was a very large group of people and animals. God led them out with a mighty hand. He told them that this was a night to remember forever! He said to celebrate it every year.

Don't you think it would have been better if Pharaoh would have listened and obeyed God? The Egyptian children wouldn't have had to die. It is always better to listen and obey God.

Words to Know

PILLAR - a vertical upright structure

DIVIDED - split into parts

ROD - a stick used for walking and herding sheep

The Lesson

God led the Israelites out of Egypt with His mighty hand. But, how did He lead them? He led them through the desert by a cloud during the day. When the big cloud moved, the people followed. When the cloud stopped, the people stopped. At night a pillar of fire led them.

But, Pharaoh wanted the Israelites back. He didn't have anyone left to do all the work. So he led his soldiers in a chase to bring the Israelites back to Egypt. The Israelites camped out at the edge of the Red Sea. Pharaoh thought they were trapped between the desert and the Red Sea.

The Israelites were afraid. They couldn't run away. The sea was in front of them. Pharaoh's army was behind them. But God took care of the Israelites. He set His cloud between the Israelites and Pharaoh's army.

God told Moses to hold his rod out over the Red Sea. Then God sent a strong wind. It blew all night. The water divided and made a path through the sea. The Israelites walked through the sea “On Dry Ground!”

Pharaoh's army tried to follow the Israelites. But, when the Israelites were safe on the other side, God told Moses to raise his rod again. This time the water came back together. Crash! It may have sounded like thunder. And all of Pharaoh's army was covered by the water.

The Israelites didn't have to fight Pharaoh's army. God fought for them. He kept His people safe. The Israelites believed God could take care of them when they saw this great thing.

Words to Know

ENEMY- someone who hates and wishes to hurt another person

MUSICAL INSTRUMENT - an object that makes music, like a tambourine or drum

The Lesson

Moses and the Israelites were safe on the other side of the Red Sea. God had saved them from Pharaoh's army. They were happy. They wanted a way to show God how happy and thankful they were. So they made up a song to God.

Everyone sang about how God brought the people out of Egypt. They praised God for His great power. He opened the sea so they could walk through on dry ground. He fought Pharaoh's army and drowned them in the sea. They said there was no one else like God. He saved them by His great hand. Then the people sang that even their enemies fear God because He is so great.

Then Moses' sister, Miriam, and the other women took musical instruments. They beat on the little hand drums. The women were excited and began to dance and sing.

Doesn't it make you feel good when people sing to you on your birthday? You know they love you. God likes His people to sing to Him, too. You can sing to God in church. You can sing to God at home. You can sing to God when you are alone. You can even make up your own songs to God.

God wants His people to be thankful for the things He does for them. God gives you a mommy and daddy to take care of you. He gives you the food you eat. He made this beautiful world for you to live in. He wants you to sing to Him.

Words to Know

GRUMBLING - complaining, talking about how unhappy they were

MANNA - food sent down from God in heaven

WILDERNESS - barren, wasteland where there is little water and nothing grows

The Lesson

God led Moses and the Israelites through the Red Sea. Now they were in a wilderness land. There was not much water for the people to drink. The food they brought with them was gone. They were hungry. So the people started grumbling.

The people were mad at Moses for bringing them into the wilderness. They said things were better in Egypt. They even thought Moses brought them out to kill them all! They forgot about how hard they had to work in Egypt. They even forgot why God brought them out.

God heard the people grumbling. He told Moses that He would send food for the people to eat. But, the food would not come from the grocery store. There were no stores in the wilderness. God would send special food down from heaven for the Israelites. Each morning manna would be on the ground. All they had to do was go out and pick it up.

When the people saw the manna, they said, "What is it?” That is what manna means - what is it? The Israelites were to go out every morning and pick up the manna - except on the Sabbath. They were not supposed to work on the Sabbath. God said to pick up twice as much on Friday so they would have food for the Sabbath.

The manna was white and tasted like honey bread. It came down from God in heaven. It must have tasted good. But the people still weren't happy. They grumbled some more. So, in the evening, God sent quails for the people to eat. The quails were birds that tasted like chicken. Now they had plenty to eat.

God was still taking care of His people. They should be happy.

SLAVERY - a person being owned by someone else and forced to work for them

The Lesson

The Lord brought the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt. He saved them from Pharaoh's army. God even opened the Red Sea so the people could walk across on dry ground. Then God gave the Israelites food to eat in the desert. You would think the Israelites would know that God loved them. You would think they would be thankful - but no.

The Israelites made camp in a place where there was no water. They were thirsty. So what did they do? They got mad at God and started grumbling - again. This time they told Moses, "Give us water to drink!" They said that Moses brought them out of Egypt for them to die.

But, where was Moses going to find water? He didn't carry enough water for everyone. And remember, there was no place for him to buy water. So, Moses did the very best thing he could do - he prayed to his Heavenly Father. Moses said, "What can I do with these people? 'They are ready to kill me."

God told Moses that He would give the people water. It would not come out of a faucet. There was no lake or river around. God showed Moses a rock. He told Moses to take his rod and hit the rock. When Moses obeyed God, cool water came splashing up out of the rock. Everyone had enough to drink. Their animals had water to drink, too.

BATTLE - a fight between two people or armies

ENEMY - someone, or something harmful or deadly

PEACEFUL - a time of peace devoid of violence or force

The Lesson

What would you do if you had to lift a very heavy box. Or, what if a big kid said he would beat you up? Would you ask for help? Would you ask Mommy or Daddy to help you? God gave you Mommies and Daddies to take care of you and help you. And, God wants to help you.

God was leading His people, the Israelites, through the wilderness. He fought against the Egyptians and took care of the Israelites. He fed them with food from heaven. He gave them water out of a rock. But, now they were facing a new enemy.

The Israelites were looking for a peaceful place to worship God. But, not everyone was peaceful. The Amalekite army met the Israelites and wanted to fight. So, Moses told Joshua to choose his best men to go out to fight.

Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of a hill to watch the battle. Moses raised his hands up in the air and prayed. The Israelite army was winning. But, Moses' arms got heavy. And, when he put his arms down, the Amalekites won. So, Aaron and Hur gave Moses “Helping Hands.” They stood at Moses sides and held up his hands. Moses prayed until the sun went down. And the Israelites won the battle.

Joshua needed help to fight the Amalekites. So, Moses prayed to the Lord. Moses needed help to hold his arms up. So, Aaron and Hur held up his arms. But, it was God who helped the Israelites win against the army of the Amalekites. He wants to help you, too.

TREASURE- something considered of great value, like money or jewels

The Lesson

God led the Israelites through the desert to Mt. Sinai. He reminded Moses and the people of how He brought them out of Egypt. He took them through the Red Sea. He gave them food to eat and water to drink. He brought them to this place so they could worship Him. Now God wanted to talk to Moses. He had a promise for all the Israelites.

One time God talked to Moses from a burning bush. But, this time God led the Israelites to a mountain. Then God told Moses to climb up the mountain. Everyone else had to stay away from the mountain. Even their animals had to stay away.

God made this promise to Moses, "If the people will obey my voice, they shall be my special treasure."

Think about all the wonderful things that belong to God - the sun and stars, gold and diamonds, beautiful mountains and gardens, and all different kinds of animals. But, God said people who obey Him are the best treasure of al!

Clouds with thunder and lightning covered Mt. Sinai. God's voice spoke to all the Israelites. It was awesome! Would they obey and do what God told them? All the Israelites gave the same answer. "We will do everything the Lord has said."

God wants you as part of His great treasure. He wants you to obey and do what He tells you. God doesn't talk to you from burning bushes. He doesn’t even tell you what to do from a mountain or thunder and lightning. God's commands are in His Word, the Bible. Will you obey?
