Words to Know

BATTLE - a fight between two people or armies

ENEMY - someone, or something harmful or deadly

PEACEFUL - a time of peace devoid of violence or force

The Lesson

What would you do if you had to lift a very heavy box. Or, what if a big kid said he would beat you up? Would you ask for help? Would you ask Mommy or Daddy to help you? God gave you Mommies and Daddies to take care of you and help you. And, God wants to help you.

God was leading His people, the Israelites, through the wilderness. He fought against the Egyptians and took care of the Israelites. He fed them with food from heaven. He gave them water out of a rock. But, now they were facing a new enemy.

The Israelites were looking for a peaceful place to worship God. But, not everyone was peaceful. The Amalekite army met the Israelites and wanted to fight. So, Moses told Joshua to choose his best men to go out to fight.

Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of a hill to watch the battle. Moses raised his hands up in the air and prayed. The Israelite army was winning. But, Moses' arms got heavy. And, when he put his arms down, the Amalekites won. So, Aaron and Hur gave Moses “Helping Hands.” They stood at Moses sides and held up his hands. Moses prayed until the sun went down. And the Israelites won the battle.

Joshua needed help to fight the Amalekites. So, Moses prayed to the Lord. Moses needed help to hold his arms up. So, Aaron and Hur held up his arms. But, it was God who helped the Israelites win against the army of the Amalekites. He wants to help you, too.

Preparation

Even though Beginner children are testing their independence in some areas of their lives, they still have a strong need for security, guidance, and help. They may be affected by instability in the home which can cause them to worry and feel insecure. Express love to the children often. Let them know that you will be there to help them. But more important, stress the fact that God loves them and knows all about them. He knows when they are afraid or in trouble. He knows when things are going wrong. And God wants to help them; all they have to do is ask Him.

Again, arrange the blue fabric or florist's foil on the floor in two sections to represent the Red Sea (as in lesson 7).
