This lesson teaches that, just as the Israelites sang praises to God, the student should also sing praise to God for all of His gifts and goodness.

ENEMY- someone who hates and wishes to hurt another person
MUSICAL INSTRUMENT - an object that makes music, like a tambourine or drum
Moses and the Israelites were safe on the other side of the Red Sea. God had saved them from Pharaoh's army. They were happy. They wanted a way to show God how happy and thankful they were. So they made up a song to God.
Everyone sang about how God brought the people out of Egypt. They praised God for His great power. He opened the sea so they could walk through on dry ground. He fought Pharaoh's army and drowned them in the sea. They said there was no one else like God. He saved them by His great hand. Then the people sang that even their enemies fear God because He is so great.
Then Moses' sister, Miriam, and the other women took musical instruments. They beat on the little hand drums. The women were excited and began to dance and sing.
Doesn't it make you feel good when people sing to you on your birthday? You know they love you. God likes His people to sing to Him, too. You can sing to God in church. You can sing to God at home. You can sing to God when you are alone. You can even make up your own songs to God.
God wants His people to be thankful for the things He does for them. God gives you a mommy and daddy to take care of you. He gives you the food you eat. He made this beautiful world for you to live in. He wants you to sing to Him.

Praising God through music is something in which even the youngest of students can participate. You do not have to wait until the children gain skill and accuracy to encourage them to praise God in song. At first young children might be content with listening to you sing. But even then, they are learning. Before long they will participate. The same holds true with the use of musical instruments. Provide opportunities for them to experiment and grow in their abilities.
Before you come to class, punch eight holes in the rims of heavy-duty paper plates with a hole punch. Punch the holes in two plates at a time so the holes will match up. Place two holes about I 1⁄2 inches apart. On the opposite edge of the plate punch two more holes. Do the same with the sides (See diagram on the pattern page). You will need enough plates for each child to have a set of two. Cut enough 10-inch lengths of yarn for each child to have four. Wrap the ends of the yarn with tape to make it easier to thread through the holes. Arrange to have some extra help for completing the craft.
1. Why were the people so happy?
2. What did the women do to show God how happy and thankful they were?
3. How does God feel when you sing praises to Him?
4. When are some times that you can sing to God?
