Words to Know

DESTROYER - from God to bring death to the first born

PROTECT- keep from danger

The Lesson

Moses and Aaron told Pharaoh that God said, "Let my people go into the desert to worship me.” But Pharaoh was stubborn; he said, "NO!" Even after God sent blood for water, frogs, bugs, hail, sickness, and darkness, Pharaoh still wouldn't let God's people go. So, God had one more thing to send to the Egyptians.

God told Moses to have the Israelites get ready. The last thing He would send was very bad. God would send His destroyer into Egypt. In one night the first born child in every family would die. The first born animals would also die.

But, God told the Israelites that He would protect them from the destroyer, if they did what Moses told them to do. Moses said to take the blood of a lamb and paint it above their doors and on the sides of them. If they obeyed, they would be safe.

That night in Egypt many mothers cried. Their oldest child had died. They were very sad. The Israelites heard the crying. They knew that the destroyer had come.

All the Israelite children were safe in their houses. Do you know why? Because they obeyed God and did what He told them. They had put the blood over their doors. And when the destroyer saw the blood, it passed by.

God loved the Israelites. They were His people. So, a little lamb had to die to save the Israelite children alive. God loves you, too. He sent His Son, Jesus, to die so that you could live with Him forever in His Kingdom. God called Jesus His Lamb. But, you must do what God tells you to do, just like the Israelites.

Preparation

Much has been written about the concrete thinking of young children. “ . . . some have feared that we are teaching the Bible too soon. Some feel we should wait until children can understand it at a more mature level, but it would be a tragedy to wait. We can safely let the children think as children. and when they become men they will put away childish things” (Teaching Kindergartners by Ruth Beechick). When teaching about death, especially the death of children, be sensitive to the emotional reaction of the children in your class. Reassure them that they are safe. God loves them and will take care of them. Mommy and Daddy love them and will look after them. And you love them and will help keep them safe.
