MESSENGER - person who brings news from another
Jacob lived a long way from the rest of his family. He was afraid of his brother, Esau. Esau sold his birthright to Jacob for a bowl of soup. Afterwards, he got mad and threatened to kill Jacob. Jacob began to miss his family and wanted to go back home.
God had given Jacob many things. He had many cows and sheep. He had camels and goats. Jacob also had many children. He packed them all up and headed for home.
A messenger told Jacob that Esau was coming. But, he wasn't alone. Esau had 400 men with him. Jacob thought Esau was coming to kill him. So, he had a plan. Jacob sent cows and sheep ahead as a gift for Esau.
Jacob wanted to keep his wives and children safe. He divided them into different groups. If Esau tried to catch one group, the others could run away.
Finally, Jacob went to meet Esau. He was still afraid of his brother. Jacob bowed to the ground seven times. Esau came running to meet him. But, Esau wasn't mad anymore. He hugged and kissed Jacob. He was happy to see him. Then Esau asked, "What is all this parade of animals?" Jacob said they were a gift. Esau said he didn’t need them. God had blessed him, too.
Esau and Jacob forgave each other. They were friends once again. They could now live together peacefully.

SHEPHERD - someone who takes care of sheep
Jacob had twelve sons - Asher, Benjamin, Dan, Gad, Issachar, Joseph, Judah, Levi, Naphtali, Reuben, Simeon and Zebulun. But, Joseph was his favorite. The other boys knew how much their father loved Joseph. They were jealous.
When Joseph was a teenager his father gave him a special gift. It was a beautiful new coat. The coat had many different colors. There was blue like the sky. It had green like the grass. It had red and yellow like the flowers. It was a wonderful coat! It was the kind of coat that a king would wear.
None of Joseph's brothers had such a coat. They were shepherds and wore shepherds’ clothes. When they saw Joseph's new coat they got mad. They hated Joseph because their father loved him best.
Joseph began having strange dreams. One night he dreamed he and his brothers were cutting wheat in the field. They tied the wheat in bundles. Joseph's wheat stood up. His brothers' wheat all bowed down to his wheat. Another time he dreamed that the sun, moon and eleven stars bowed down to him.
Joseph's dreams made his brothers very mad. They said they would never bow down to him. They hated Joseph so much they wanted to kill him! God is not happy when you are jealous and hate.

JEALOUS - angry because someone has something that you don't have
SLAVE- someone who is owned by another person and is forced to work for them
One day Joseph's father sent him to check on his brothers. They were shepherds. They were out in the field watching their sheep. The brothers saw Joseph coming. They were not happy. They said, "Here comes the dreamer!”
The brothers hated Joseph. They were jealous because their father loved him most. Some of them wanted to kill him. But, Reuben told them that they shouldn't do that. So they came up with “A Mean Trick” to do to Joseph.
Joseph's brothers were waiting when he got to them. They took his beautiful coat off him. They threw Joseph down into a hole in the ground. Then the brothers sat down to eat. Soon they saw some men riding on camels. Judah had an idea. Instead of killing Joseph, they would sell him to these men. The men gave Joseph's brothers 20 silver coins. They would later sell him to be someone's slave.
What were they going to tell their father? Joseph's brothers dipped his beautiful coat into some blood. They took the coat back to their father. They lied and said they had found the coat. They said that a wild animal must have killed him.
“The Mean Trick” and the lies made Joseph's father very sad. He began to cry. Nothing could cheer him. His favorite son was gone.

RELEASED- set free
SERVANT - someone who works for another doing household jobs
WISDOM - knowing how to make good choices and decisions
Joseph's brothers sold him as a slave. Now he was in prison because of a lie. Joseph met two of the king's servants in prison. Both men had dreams that worried them. Joseph told the men what their dreams meant. After a while, one of the servants was released from prison. He went back to work for the king.
One night the king had a strange dream. He dreamed that seven fat cows came up out of the river. Then seven more cows came out of the river. These cows were very skinny. Al of a sudden they ate up the fat cows! The king awakened and was worried.
Later the king had another dream. He saw seven fat, juicy heads of grain and seven dried up heads of grain. The dried up grain swallowed up the fat, juicy grain.
These strange dreams upset the king. He called his smartest men together and asked, "What Does It Mean?" But, none of the men could tell him. They didn't know what the dreams meant.
Then the king's servant remembered Joseph. He said that Joseph could help the king. So the king asked for Joseph to come see him. He asked, "What Does It Mean?" Joseph said God was showing the king what was about to happen.
The fat cows and fat grain meant there would be seven good years. There would be plenty to eat. Then there would be seven years when there wouldn’t be enough. The skinny cows and grain showed that people would be hungry. God made Joseph very wise.

REWARD - something given for something done
The king was having some strange dreams. He wanted to know what they meant. He called for Joseph to help him understand the dreams. Joseph trusted in God to help him. So God showed Joseph what the dreams meant.
God said there would be seven good years. During those years there would be lots of food. Gardens would grow grain and other vegetables. Cows and sheep would grow fat because they had plenty to eat. But then there would be seven bad years. Nothing would grow. People would be hungry. Animals would get skinny and die.
The king was very glad that Joseph helped him understand his dreams. He wanted to do something special to reward Joseph. So, the king put Joseph in charge of gathering food into barns. He saved food in the good years so there would be food to eat later.
Joseph told the people to bring food to his barns. He had big stacks of grain and wheat. There was food for the people and food for their animals. The people wanted to stop bringing food. But Joseph told them they needed more.
Then the seven bad years came. There was nothing for people to eat. They went to Joseph and he sold them food.
Joseph trusted in God. And, God blessed Joseph. Joseph went from being a slave in prison to being in charge of all the food. God used Joseph to help feed all the people.

FAMINE- a lack of food
Have you ever been so hungry that you would eat just about anything? Probably not. When you are hungry you just go to the kitchen and find something to eat. Or, you ask your mommy and she gives you a snack. And, there is always food in the grocery store.
But when Joseph lived in Egypt, there was a famine in the land. The people couldn't grow food in their gardens. The animals couldn't find grass to eat. Before long, the animals got skinny. Some of them even died. There weren't any stores where people could buy food. And the people became very hungry.
Then someone remembered that there was plenty of food in Joseph’s barns. Everyone had brought their extra food to Joseph for a time just like this. Soon people lined up to buy food from Joseph. And everyone had something to eat again.
There was also a famine where Joseph's family lived. They didn't have anything to eat. But Joseph's father had heard that there was food in Egypt. So he sent ten of his sons to Egypt to buy food.
Joseph saw his ten brothers in line to buy food. He knew who they were. But Joseph had changed - he was all grown up. His brothers didn't know that he was their brother, Joseph. They had sold Joseph as a slave. But, now God was using Joseph to help feed his brother's “Empty Stomachs.”

VISITOR - a person coming to see you
Joseph was very busy in Egypt. He had an important job. Joseph was in charge of all the food in the land. Gardens wouldn't grow food. So, people came to Joseph to buy their food.
One day Joseph had some surprise visitors. Ten of his own brothers had come to buy food. They bowed to Joseph. But they didn't know it was Joseph who sold them the food. He told his brothers to bring their youngest brother the next time they came to buy food. Joseph missed his family.
The next time the brothers came, Joseph played a trick on them. When his brothers looked in their bags of food they found their money inside. Joseph sent men to bring them back. His brothers were afraid he would think they stole the money. They bowed again to Joseph, just like in Joseph's dreams.
Joseph couldn't hide it any longer. He told his brothers not to be afraid. He was not mad at them for selling him to be a slave. He said, "God sent me here to save your life!" Joseph hugged his brothers. He sent them back to bring their father and their families to live in Egypt. Then Joseph could take care of them. They would all have food to eat.
Even though Joseph's brothers were mean to him, he still loved them. God wants you to love each other just like they were your very own brothers and sisters.

OVERBOARD - to fall from a boat into the water
STARVING - to die from lack of food
Do you know what “A Life Saver” is? No, not the candy type. “A Life Saver” is something that is used on boats. If a person falls overboard, a ring that will float is thrown out to the person to help him keep his head above the water. That ring is tied to a rope. The person can be pulled back to the boat by the rope. God used Joseph much like the floating ring.
People and animals were starving to death in Egypt. But, Joseph had lots of food stored in barns. The people cried out to Joseph for help. Joseph sold them food from his barns. The food helped keep the people alive.
There were seven years that the land did not grow food. For seven years the people had to buy food from Joseph. After a while their money ran out. What would they do now?
Joseph told the people to bring him their cows and sheep. He traded them food for their animals. After that, people sold Joseph their land for food. Soon Joseph had everyone's land, their animals and money. Joseph gave all of these to the king. Joseph promised to take care of the people.
All of Joseph's family, his brothers, their wives and children, came to live in Egypt. Joseph gave them a place to live in Goshen. He made sure they had food to eat, too. God used Joseph to be “A Life Saver” to the people of Egypt and to his family. And God sent Jesus to save us from our sins. He is our “Life Saver.”

PHARAOH - leader of Egypt, something like a king
A new Pharaoh came to be the leader in Egypt. This Pharaoh saw that Joseph's family was growing. They were called Israelites. Pharaoh was afraid of the Israelites. He thought they would take over his land. So, he decided to put a stop to them. He ordered that all the baby boys be killed. That was a terrible thing to do!
An Israelite mother loved her baby boy very much. She hid her baby from the Egyptian soldiers. But, as he grew it was harder to hide him. So, she made him a little “Basket Boat.” She took her baby to the river. There she carefully put him into the basket. Then she placed the basket in the river. She hoped someone kind would find her baby and save his life.
The baby's big sister, Miriam, hid in the tall grass. She watched the little “Basket Boat” to see what would happen. Pharaoh's daughter came to the river to take a bath. She heard the baby cry and picked him up. What do you think will happen to the baby?
Miriam saw what was happening. She ran to the princess. She asked if she should find someone to take care of the baby. Then she brought her own mother to the princess to take care of the baby.
The princess named the baby Moses. And Moses grew up living in the palace. God saved his life. He had big plans for Moses. And God used Miriam to be His helper. God chose you to be one of His people, too.

MIRACLE - an amazing thing that only God can do
PALACE - fancy home where the king lives
SHEPHERD'S STAFF - a cane-like stick used to herd sheep
Moses grew up in the palace. But he didn't like the way Pharaoh treated his people, the Israelites. So, when he was a man Moses left the palace. He went to a far away land to take care of sheep.
One day while he was watching his sheep, Moses saw a strange sight. A bush was covered with fire - but it wasn't burning up! He carefully walked toward the bush. Moses heard a voice speaking to him. It was the voice of God!
God told Moses He had an important job for him to do. God wanted Moses to go and talk to Pharaoh. He wanted Pharaoh to let the Israelites go into the desert to worship. But Moses was afraid.
God said, "Moses, I will be with you.'" God told him that He would lead the people to a new land. He would give them a land where there was plenty to eat - a land where they would be free to worship Him.
God showed Moses a sign that He would be with him. He told Moses to throw his shepherd's staff on the ground. Moses obeyed and the staff became a snake. God said He would use miracles like that to show Pharaoh and the people that He was with Moses. He also sent Moses' brother, Aaron to help him.
God spoke to Moses in “A Burning Bush.” He speaks to you
through His Word, the Bible. God wants you to listen and obey Him. If you do, He will be with you, too.
