Words to Know

MIRACLE - an amazing thing that only God can do

PALACE - fancy home where the king lives

SHEPHERD'S STAFF - a cane-like stick used to herd sheep

The Lesson

Moses grew up in the palace. But he didn't like the way Pharaoh treated his people, the Israelites. So, when he was a man Moses left the palace. He went to a far away land to take care of sheep.

One day while he was watching his sheep, Moses saw a strange sight. A bush was covered with fire - but it wasn't burning up! He carefully walked toward the bush. Moses heard a voice speaking to him. It was the voice of God!

God told Moses He had an important job for him to do. God wanted Moses to go and talk to Pharaoh. He wanted Pharaoh to let the Israelites go into the desert to worship. But Moses was afraid.

God said, "Moses, I will be with you.'" God told him that He would lead the people to a new land. He would give them a land where there was plenty to eat - a land where they would be free to worship Him.

God showed Moses a sign that He would be with him. He told Moses to throw his shepherd's staff on the ground. Moses obeyed and the staff became a snake. God said He would use miracles like that to show Pharaoh and the people that He was with Moses. He also sent Moses' brother, Aaron to help him.

God spoke to Moses in “A Burning Bush.” He speaks to you
through His Word, the Bible. God wants you to listen and obey Him. If you do, He will be with you, too.

Preparation

Preschoolers are naturally self-centered beings. They are ready to believe that Jesus is their Friend, that God made them, and that He loves them. They will naturally be interested in learning how God can speak to them. Explain that God uses His Word, the Bible, to speak to us.The Bible is God's message to us. When we read the Bible, God is speaking to us. Treat it with great respect as you explain that God told men what He wanted written in His Book. When we read the Bible it is like reading a letter from someone we love.

Before you come to class, cut or tear red, orange and yellow tissue paper into one-inch pieces. Enlarge and copy the bush pattern onto construction paper for each child. (The pattern is on the Pattern Page.)
