FOOLISH- silly
LANGUAGE - the way people talk to each other
When Noah and his family left the ark, God told the people and animals to have children. He wanted many more elephants, more kangaroos, more turtles, and more birds. God also wanted more people. God didn't want people and animals to live in one place. He wanted people and animals all over the world!
But Noah's grandchildren and their children didn't do what God said. They acted just like the people before the flood. They were doing things that made God unhappy. And they all wanted to stay in one place.
The people built a big city to live in. Then someone said, "Let's build a great big tower!" They wanted the tower to be so big that it would reach up to the sky. They wanted everyone to see how great they were.
Well, God looked down and saw what the people were doing. And, He was not happy! God said He would put a stop to the tower. In those days everyone talked alike. So, God made everyone talk funny. They didn't know what other people were saying. Everyone stopped working on the tower. They named the tower Babel because God made them talk funny.
Soon, people left the tower. They moved away from the city. They went all over the earth- -just as God told them. It's always best to do what God says!

VACATION - a time of rest from your work
NATION - a community of people
Long, long ago there was a man named Abram. One day God said to Abram, "Start Packing!" Now, I'm sure Abram wondered where he was going.
God told Abram to move away from his family and friends. God was going to lead Abram to a new land. God had great plans for Abram. Abram's children, grandchildren and great grandchildren would become great nations.
Abram was so excited. He went to his wife, Sarai, and told her to Start Packing! Just think how Sarai must have felt. Do you think she was excited? She probably asked, "Where are we going?" Abram said, "I don't know. We must trust God. He will show us the way."
So, Abram and Sarai packed all their clothes. They left their home. They left their family and friends. Abram and Sarai did what God told them and started on their trip. They lived in a tent instead of their nice home for the rest of their lives. Abram and Sarai traveled a long way. God made Abram very rich in cattle, silver, and gold. God showed Abram the land that He would give to his great-grandchildren. It was beautiful. Abram was so happy that he built an altar and thanked God.
Abram obeyed and trusted God to keep His promise. God always keeps His promises.

BORED- tired of doing nothing
Has anyone ever promised you that they would do something and then forgot their promise? Or, have you ever promised your mommy you would pick up your toys, but didn’t? Sometimes we forget our promises. And, sometimes we break our promises. But, God always keeps His promises.
Do you remember in last week's lesson that God told Abram to Start Packing and move? Abram did what God told him to do. He and Sarai went from one town to another. They lived in tents for the rest of their lives. God showed Abram the land that He promised to give to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Now God made another promise to Abram. He told Abram to look up into the sky. "How many stars do you see?" God asked. The sky was full of stars. There were just too many to count. God told Abram that his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren would be like the stars--too many to count! Abram believed God and this made him righteous.
But there was a problem. Abram and Sarai were getting old. They didn't even have one child. Do you think God forgot about His promise to Abram? No! God doesn't forget His promises. He was just waiting for the right time. He wanted everything to be right before He gave Abram children. You can always count on God to do things right!
When you make a promise, do you keep it?

INVITED- asked to come
One afternoon Abram was sitting in the doorway of his tent. It was hot outside and Abram was resting in the shade.
Abram looked up and saw three men coming his way. He knew that the men must be hot, too. So Abram ran and asked them to come and rest a while. He asked Sarai to make them something to eat. Abram even brought some water for them to wash up and cool themselves.
One of the men called out, "Where is your wife, Sarai?" They had something important to tell Abram and they wanted Sarai to hear it, too. Sarai was inside the tent. But, she could hear what the men were saying. The man then told Abram that Sarai was going to have a son. Sarai and Abram were getting very old. They were as old as your great-grandparents. It was way past the time for them to have babies!
When Sarai heard what the men were saying, she laughed - not out loud- to herself. She thought the men must be joking. She was too old to have a baby. One of them asked , "Why did Sarai laugh?" Sarai wondered how they knew she had laughed.
The men told Abram and Sarai that the Lord would give them a son. Nothing was too hard for the Lord! And Sarai did have a son. They called his name Isaac. God always keeps His promises.

FLOCK -a group of sheep living together
HERD - a group of cattle living together
When Abram and Lot first came to the new land, they all lived together. But their sheep had many lambs and their cows had many baby calves. Soon there was not enough room for all their sheep and cows. So, Abram told Lot to choose where he wanted to live. Lot chose to live in the city of Sodom.
The people who lived in Sodom were very bad. They didn't love or serve God. They thought bad thoughts. They did bad things. And the way they lived made God very sad. It made Him so sad that God decided to destroy the city.
God sent two angels to tell Lot to get out of the city. They told Lot that God was going to send fire from heaven. Everything in Sodom would be burned up. Even the bad people of Sodom would die.
Lot hated to leave his home and all his things. So the angels took Lot, his wife, and two daughters by their hands. They hurried them out of Sodom. The angels told them to run to the mountains and not look back.
But, Lot's wife didn't obey. She loved her home and all of her things. When she smelled the smoke from the fires she looked back to see what was happening. Lot's wife showed that she loved her things more than she loved God. So, God turned her into a big salt block!
Lot and his daughters were safe because they obeyed. But, Lot's wife didn't obey. She didn't do what God told her to do, so she was punished.

STRIFE -fighting or quarreling
JEALOUS- resentful, envious, wanting what someone else has
God gives us all families. He gives us mothers and fathers to take care of us. God wants us to do things together. He wants us to love one another.
God promised to bless Abram with a very large family and changed his name to Abraham. God also changed Sarai’s name to Sarah. God said He would give Abraham so many grandchildren that they couldn't be counted--like the stars in the sky!
Sarah saw that she was getting too old to have a baby. So, she told Abraham to take Hagar, one of her maids. Maybe God would let her maid have a baby for Abraham. And guess what - Hagar had a son. Abraham named him Ishmael.
But, this was not the son God had promised to Abraham. God promised that Sarah would have a son. He always keeps His promises. When the time was right, God gave Sarah a son, too. They named him Isaac. But the two boys didn't get along.
One day Abraham gave a party for his son, Isaac. Everyone was having a good time. But, Ishmael was jealous. Sarah saw Ishmael making fun of her son, Isaac. Well, it made Sarah mad!
Instead of punishing the two boys for fighting, Sarah told Abraham to send Hagar and her son away from the family. Abraham was sad. Hagar was sad. But God loved Hagar and Ishmael. He said He would take care of them. He said Abraham's family would become many great nations. God kept His promise to Abraham. And Abraham was the father of many nations!

WISDOM- judging what is true and right
IDOL - a deity other than God
Isaac was a grown man when his mother, Sarah, died. It was now time for him to find a wife. But, Abraham didn't want Isaac to marry just anyone. The girls who lived near them didn't love God. They worshiped idols.
Abraham called his most faithful servant to find a wife for Isaac. She must love and worship the true God. The servant had to travel back to where Abraham used to live. He promised to bring back a good wife for Isaac.
The servant took gifts and placed them on his camel’s back. He prayed as he started on the long trip. He asked God to help him find the right wife for Isaac.
At last, the servant came to a well. He was hot and thirsty. Again he prayed that God would show him the right wife for Isaac. He would know she was the right
one if she offered water to him and his camels.
Rebekah came to the well. She was very pretty. She saw that the servant was hot and thirsty. She said, "Let me get some water for you, and some for your camel."
The servant told Rebekah's father that God led him to find Rebekah. Rebekah said she would be happy to marry Isaac. The servant was very happy that he could keep his promise to Abraham. He thanked God for helping him.

OUTDO - do better than someone else
Abraham's servant traveled a long, long way to find a bride for Isaac. Her name was Rebekah. Rebekah said that she would travel the long, long way back to where Isaac lived. Isaac loved Rebekah and they were married.
But, Rebekah and Isaac were sad. They didn’t have any children. Rebekah wanted a little baby to love and to hold. She wanted a baby to sing to. So she prayed and asked God to give her a baby. Isaac prayed for a baby, too. And, God gave them not just one baby, but two! They were twin boys.
Jacob and Esau were very different. Esau was born first. He had lots of hair and was red all over. He loved to be outside. He took care of his father's sheep. He loved to hunt and roam around the countryside. Esau was Isaac's favorite.
Jacob was a quiet boy. He stayed close to his tent. Jacob probably grew vegetables in the garden and his mother around the house. Jacob was Rebekah’s favorite.
These boys were not best friends. They were always trying to outdo each other. They were not always nice to each other.
Jesus is a Friend who sticks closer than a brother. He loves us at all times even when we are not very lovable! He wants you to talk to Him in prayer. He will never leave you. He is better than a brother! God made each one of us different. But, we are all special and important to God.

BIRTHRIGHT - legal rights inherited by birth
Jacob and Esau were very different. Jacob was his mother's favorite son. He stayed at home and worked in the garden. Esau was a hunter and was his father's favorite son. Esau went out early in the morning to hunt.
One day Esau hunted all day. He came home very, very hungry. "Hmm, what is that wonderful smell," Esau asked. He followed the smell to his brother Jacob's tent.
Jacob sat stirring a big pot over the fire. He was making a delicious stew. Esau's mouth watered! "Give me some of your delicious stew," said Esau. "I'm about to starve to death!" But, Jacob said, "First give me your birthright." Because Esau was born first, he had the birthright. But Esau wasn't careful with his birthright. He didn't realize how much it was worth. So he traded Jacob his birthright for a bowl of stew.
The bowl of stew would be gone as soon as Esau ate it. But, the birthright was worth much more and would last a long, long time. Esau traded his birthright for something to eat. And, that is how God wanted it to be.
God wants us to always try to do what is right. We should want to do right just like we were hungry for it. And God promises to bless us if we do.

VALLEY - the low land between two hills or mountain ranges
Jacob's brother Esau was mad at him. Jacob had traded Esau out of his birthright. Jacob traded Esau a bowl of stew for the birthright. Now Esau wanted his birthright back. Esau even said that he would kill Jacob!
Jacob's mother didn't want Esau to hurt Jacob. So she sent Jacob on a long trip. Jacob walked a long, long ways. At night Jacob would sleep under the stars.
One night Jacob was very tired. He found a large rock on the ground and used it for a pillow. And, while Jacob was asleep he had a dream. In his dream he saw a long stairway reaching up into heaven. There were angels on the stairway. Some of the angels were coming down the stairway and some were going back up. God was standing at the top of the stairway. God spoke to Jacob and told him that He would always be with Jacob wherever he went.
Jacob woke up from his dream. He remembered his dream and what God told him. Jacob said, "God is in this place." Jacob took his stone pillow and put it in a special place. It would help him remember what God told him.
God said that He would always be with Jacob. God is always with you, too. He is with you when you sleep and when you are awake. He is with you at home and on vacation or in school. God is with you everywhere you go. And you can talk to Him anytime!
