The Lesson

Jacob's brother Esau was mad at him. Jacob had traded Esau out of his birthright. Jacob traded Esau a bowl of stew for the birthright. Now Esau wanted his birthright back. Esau even said that he would kill Jacob!

Jacob's mother didn't want Esau to hurt Jacob. So she sent Jacob on a long trip. Jacob walked a long, long ways. At night Jacob would sleep under the stars.

One night Jacob was very tired. He found a large rock on the ground and used it for a pillow. And, while Jacob was asleep he had a dream. In his dream he saw a long stairway reaching up into heaven. There were angels on the stairway. Some of the angels were coming down the stairway and some were going back up. God was standing at the top of the stairway. God spoke to Jacob and told him that He would always be with Jacob wherever he went.

Jacob woke up from his dream. He remembered his dream and what God told him. Jacob said, "God is in this place." Jacob took his stone pillow and put it in a special place. It would help him remember what God told him.

God said that He would always be with Jacob. God is always with you, too. He is with you when you sleep and when you are awake. He is with you at home and on vacation or in school. God is with you everywhere you go. And you can talk to Him anytime!

Materials Needed

Bible, YEA Students' and Teacher's books, attendance and memory verse charts, stars, CD, CD player, lunch-sized paper bags, newspapers, tape or stapler, suitcase (items to goin the suitcase are optional). colorful cord, three paper towel tubes for each child in your class, angel stickers

Preparation

Preschoolers, as well as adults, find it difficult to understand how God can be with each of us at all times. The fact that God is omnipresent must be accepted by faith. Reassure the children that God will always do what He says He will do. Talk about times when the children feel alone or lonely. Explain that God is even with them at those times. He is with them when they are at home, at school, or on vacation; He has promised never to leave us or forsake us.

Before class, fill lunch-sized paper bags with crumbled newspaper and tape closed, enough so that each child will have one. Punch holes in the paper towel tubes about an inch from each end, going through both sides. Cut enough colorful cord into approximately 54 inch lengths for every child to have one (see Activity). Enlist some teenagers or other parents to help with today’s activity!!
