LANGUAGE - the way people talk to each other

The Lesson

When Noah and his family left the ark, God told the people and animals to have children. He wanted many more elephants, more kangaroos, more turtles, and more birds. God also wanted more people. God didn't want people and animals to live in one place. He wanted people and animals all over the world!

But Noah's grandchildren and their children didn't do what God said. They acted just like the people before the flood. They were doing things that made God unhappy. And they all wanted to stay in one place.

The people built a big city to live in. Then someone said, "Let's build a great big tower!" They wanted the tower to be so big that it would reach up to the sky. They wanted everyone to see how great they were.

Well, God looked down and saw what the people were doing. And, He was not happy! God said He would put a stop to the tower. In those days everyone talked alike. So, God made everyone talk funny. They didn't know what other people were saying. Everyone stopped working on the tower. They named the tower Babel because God made them talk funny.

Soon, people left the tower. They moved away from the city. They went all over the earth- -just as God told them. It's always best to do what God says!

Preparation

The lessons in this second book of the Creation Series are designed to help young children see how God guided, protected, punished, and blessed His people in the Scriptures. The lessons will also help the children discover their own special qualities, and how important they are to God. The goal is that these children will develop loving Christian attitudes toward others and a loving, obedient relationship with God.

A happy relationship of trust between the teacher and the children facilitates learning. A happy, relaxed atmosphere, along with activities that children can successfully accomplish, contributes to both the children's self-respect and their relationships of trust.

Greet the children warmly as they enter the classroom, being mindful to call each one by name. Involve the children in playing with blocks (Legos, or any type of blocks). Ask them to see how high they can stack them. They can work alone, or in groups.

Before class collect enough bathroom tissue tubes so that each child will have two. Cut wrapping paper or colored construction paper into rectangles, 41⁄2 ×6 inches (one per child). Cut yarn into 20" lengths. Have the children act out the motions in parentheses while you tell the story.

Review Questions

As you ask the following questions, use the motions to help the children remember.

1. What did God tell the people and animals to do? (Form a large circle with arms.)

2. What did the people want to do? (Interlock arms with the children.)

3. What did the people build? (Reach up high.)

4. How did God feel about what the people were doing? (Look sad.)

5. What did God do that made the people stop building the tower? (Say: "Bla, Bla, Bla..")
