The Lesson

Noah had all the animals settled inside the ark. Noah and Mrs. Noah, their three sons and their wives were inside too. BAM! "What was that sound?" asked Mrs. Noah. Noah hurried to see if everyone was all right.

When Noah got to the door of the ark he found that God had shut the door. Now everything would be safe and dry inside. As soon as the door was shut God kept his promise and the rain started falling.

The rain fell harder and harder. The animals heard the sound. Plip, plop, plip, plop. They could smell the rain. Rain drops fell in puddles and on the roof. Crash, bang went the thunder. The animals were all safe inside the ark.

One day the ark began to rock back and forth. This really big boat began to move. It was floating! Noah knew that there must be water all over everything. It was just like God had promised.

The rain kept falling for forty days! Everyone was getting tired of the rain. The animals couldn't run and play. Then, one day the rain stopped. But, the ark was still floating in all that water.

People laughed when Noah told them that God would send rain. They didn't believe him. But, when God makes a promise, He always keeps it!

Materials Needed

Bible, YEA students and teacher's books, attendance and memory verse charts, stars, songbook, CD/cassette player and CD/music tapes, construction paper, glue, yarn, pumpkin seeds, blue food coloring, sealable plastic bag, scissors, cotton balls

Preparation

Children make promises all the time. They promise not to argue with a brother or sister again, and to put their toys away. But young children have no concept of time. They do not realize that "always" is a very long time, and that "never" is almost impossible to achieve.

Parents, too, are guilty of making promises they cannot keep. A father may promise to take his children to the park on his day off, only to be called in to work on that day. Or a mother may promise to bring something special home from the store for her children, but forgets to do it.

It is reassuring to know that we serve a faithful God who fulfills His promises. God promised Noah that He would send rain to destroy wickedness on the earth. The people ignored this promise. But, Noah knew that God could be trusted to keep His promise, in spite of men's mocking. And, true to His word, God sent rain!

God has given us many promises in His Word. Emphasize to the children that when God says that He will do something they can count on it!

God didn't send the rain until Noah and his family were safely enclosed in the ark. Not only was God's judgement falling on the wicked, but His mercy and protection were on those who believed and trusted in Him.

Before class, make enough copies of the ark used in lesson eight of the student’s book on white construction paper, so that each child will have one. Also, cut rain drop shapes out of blue construction paper. Number them from one to six.

Place one tablespoon of rubbing alcohol and a few drops of blue food coloring into a sealable plastic bag, along with about 1cup of dried pumpkin seeds (Amounts may vary depending on the size of your class). Shake until all seeds are thoroughly colored. Spread out on several layers of paper towel and allow to dry.

Review Questions

Place the numbered rain drops on a table or on a flannel board. Allow each child to choose a rain drop. Ask them the question that corresponds to the number on their rain drop. This can be repeated as many times as you like.

1. Who were the people who were inside the ark?

2. Who shut the door of the ark?

3. How many days and nights did it rain?

4. What did the ark do when water covered everything?

5. What did people do when Noah told them there would be a flood?

6. What do we know about God's promises?
