PROTECTION - to keep from danger

The Lesson

One day God looked down from heaven at the world He had made. It was no longer the beautiful place it was when God made it. People were doing all kinds of bad things. God was very unhappy with the people of the world. So He decided to send a great flood of water to cover everything.

God saw that Noah was a good man. He loved God and obeyed Him. God wanted to save Noah and his family from the flood. So He told Noah to do a very strange thing. Noah was to build a really big boat called an ark. But Noah built it where there was no water!

God said that it was going to rain for a very long time. There would be water in the streets, in the fields and in the houses. Finally, water would cover everything!

Noah believed God and obeyed. He chopped down tall trees and cut the logs into boards. Then Noah hammered the boards into place. But, when his neighbors saw it they made fun of Noah. He told the people about the flood God would send, but they didn't believe him. They said he was crazy. Noah just kept on working.

It is always best to obey God's rules. They are for our own good. God's rules are to keep us safe and make us happy.

Preparation

We live in an evil, sinful world where a whole lot of hurt and danger can come into any of our lives. Some of the danger is a result of God's judgement, as in today's lesson. Some is the natural result of human choices.

Noah was facing a very great danger. But Noah also experienced the power and love of our mighty God. God's care for Noah's and our safety is plentiful and adequate. There is no situation that is greater than God.

Children are learning how to be safe. They are given directions and rules to follow to keep them from danger. Noah was given directions to keep him safe from the danger that was about to befall all of mankind. This lesson will give the children comfort and encouragement to obey directions in dangerous times.

Sometimes following God's ways defies the world's logic. It doesn't seem to make sense. But when you place your trust in God and are obedient to Him, you demonstrate your faith and love for Him.

Before you come to class, enlarge and copy the ark pattern onto white construction paper for each child. The pattern can be found on the pattern page D. You will also need to have enough empty, long Kleenex boxes for each child to have one. You may want to ask friends or parents to save them for you. Cut the top out of the Kleenex boxes with an Exacto knife before class.
