God gave the very first people a special place to live. He made a beautiful garden home for them. There were lots of trees with fruit to eat. God told them they could eat anything in the garden, except the fruit of one tree. But, Adam and Eve didn't obey God. So, God had to punish them. He made Adam and Eve leave their beautiful home. They could never go back to the garden.
God still loved Adam and Eve. He blessed them with two little boys of their own. They named one boy Cain and the other boy Abel. This was the first family.
Adam and Eve taught the boys about God. They taught them to pray and give offerings to Him. They wanted Cain and Abel to obey God.
Cain and Abel were very different. Cain liked to work in the garden. Abel was a shepherd - he took care of the sheep. Abel did what God told him to do. He gave an offering of one of his sheep. Cain gave an offering of vegetables from his garden. When God was pleased with Abel's offering, Cain got angry. Cain just kept disobeying God until God had to punish him too.
God wants you to learn about Him and love Him. He wants you to do the things He tells you in His Word.

Today's Bible story teaches children what happened to the first family when they failed to obey the commands of God. Young children are involved in an ongoing process of learning about limits and self-control.In each situation, learning to obey may be a difficult choice. Sometimes dealing with the consequences of a choice teaches better than words.
To help children learn to obey you must have realistic expectations for their behavior. If you gear your lesson and activities to their level of interest they will be more likely to follow your directions.
Always discuss the consequences of certain behaviors with your class. God told Adam and Eve what the consequence would be if they ate the fruit of the tree in the middle of the Garden of Eden. They knowingly and willingly disobeyed. Their punishment was consistent with the warning. But, God was there to lovingly receive them when they repented!
Cut out magazine pictures of horses, cows, chickens, various kinds of vegetables, and a picture of an apartment building. Glue each picture to a piece of construction paper to be used as visual aids in the story.

Dear Heavenly Father, Thank you for teaching me how important it is that I obey. Help me to obey my Mother and Daddy. But, most of all, help me to obey you. In Jesus' name. Amen.
