The Lesson

Jesus knew that it was almost time for Him to die. He was going to pay for all the bad things that everyone would ever do. Jesus wanted to talk to His Father. He asked if there was any other way that our sins could be forgiven. But, Jesus also told God that He would do whatever God said.

Jesus took Peter, James and John with Him to the garden to pray. But, instead of praying, His disciples fell asleep.

They heard the sound of many feet walking to the garden. It was soldiers coming to arrest Jesus. Peter tried to stop them. He took a sword and cut off the ear of one of the men. But, Jesus touched the man’s head and his ear was healed.

God answered Jesus’ prayer. There was no other way that our sins could be forgiven. God always answers our prayers in the way that is best for us.

Preparation

This week’s lesson will be reinforcement for the children who pray at home, but for some children it may be a whole new experience. Even some families who attend church regularly do not have prayer as a regular part of their daily routine. You may have many in your class who do not understand that they can talk to God at any time and anywhere.

“From prayer experiences the child sees that prayer is talking to God. He can learn to thank God and to ask God for help. He could also learn to tell God he loves Him. . . Whatever a child can say to a parent, he can say to God; he tends to think of God in parental terms” (Teaching Preschoolers, by Ruth Beechick).

To introduce your children to prayer, keep a list of their requests. Recognizing when their prayers are answered will encourage them to pray often. Remind your students that God always hears their prayers even when the answer seems to be no. God knows what is best for us and will answer our prayers in the ways that are best.
