The Lesson

Jesus once lived on earth. He did a lot of good deeds. He fed hungry people. He healed many sick people. He even brought some dead people back to life.

Jesus knew that He would soon die. He walked a long way to Jerusalem with His disciples. They would eat the Passover meal that night.

The road to Jerusalem was very dusty. The disciples’ feet got all tired and dirty. After eating the meal, Jesus did a good deed for His disciples. He poured some water in a bowl. He put a towel around His waist like an apron. Then He got down on His knees and washed the disciples’ feet. Jesus told them that He was showing them how to be kind and show love to each other. Jesus wanted them to know that everyone should be kind to others.

Can you think of something kind that you can do for someone?

Preparation

It’s all too easy to assume intense preparation, wisdom or spiritual discernment are unnecessary when working with beginners. But you will soon discover that you need a great deal of all of these things. You are working with children while they are at their most impressionable stage of development. Jesus emphasized the value of little children when He said, “Let the little children come to me. The kingdom of heaven belongs to people like them” (NIrV). These are precious futures we are molding. It is imperative that we take our job seriously, be well prepared and spend a lot of time in prayer for each child and the class.

Teaching the concept of humility will be difficult for beginners. Jesus was showing kindness to His disciples by washing their feet. Young children can understand what it means to be kind to others. Help them think of some things they can do to be kind to others. Have the children help the teacher pick up crayons and other equipment that may have been used in class today. This will demonstrate to the children what it means to be kind and helpful.

Review Questions

1. What kind thing did Jesus do for His disciples?

2. Why did He wash their feet?

3. What other kind things did Jesus do while He was here on earth?
