The Lesson

Jesus would soon go to His Father’s house. He wanted to eat the Passover meal with His disciples before He left. They were His friends. The Passover is a special meal. When we eat the Passover it helps us remember what Jesus did for us.

Everyone sat down around the table. Jesus took some flat bread and broke it into pieces. Jesus thanked God for the bread. Then, He gave a piece of bread to each of His disciples. He said “Eat this and remember my body.” The bread was to help them remember why He had to suffer. They all ate the bread Jesus gave them.

Jesus took a cup of wine. He thanked God for it. He said, “When you drink this wine, I want you to remember that my blood will be shed.” He wanted them to remember that He would die for all the wrong things we have done.

Jesus said every time we eat this special meal remember what it means. He wants us to always remember that He suffered and died for us.

Jesus said, “Do not worry. Do not be afraid. I will come back.” Jesus did not stay dead. We’ll see Him one day in His Kingdom. He will eat a Passover meal with us then.

Preparation

Today’s lesson deals in symbolism. In order for preschoolers to understand what the symbolic meaning of the bread and wine of the Passover stand for, they must first understand what a symbol is. We carry a picture of a loved one in our wallet. We may say that this is “Tommy.” We understand that we do not actually carry “Tommy” in our wallet, it is just a picture of him. The bread and the wine of the Passover were not the actual blood and body of Jesus, they were merely a picture, or symbol, of them. This picture, or symbol, was given to help us remember, just as the picture in our wallet is there to help us remember what that person looks like.
