Words to Know

PRANCING - strutting walk of a horse, to walk lifting legs high

FLOAT - a vehicle decorated for a parade

HOSANNA - Praise God

The Lesson

Munch, munch, munch. The little donkey stood eating the sweet green grass. Two men untied him and started walking down the road. “Where are they taking me?” wondered the little donkey. The men took him to Jesus. The little donkey thought, “This is a very special man. He must be the Master.”

Some of Jesus’ friends put their coats on the little donkey’s back. The little donkey was very proud when Jesus climbed on his back and sat down. Jesus’ friends led the donkey down the road to Jerusalem.

The streets were lined with happy people waving palm branches. They were shouting, “Hosanna, Hosanna, Hosanna! Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord.” Some threw their coats and palm branches on the ground for the donkey to walk on. Others bowed down and worshiped Jesus.

The little donkey was happy to carry Jesus on his back. He didn’t know that he was carrying the Savior of the world. All he knew was that he had been chosen for this very special job.

Materials Needed

Bible, YEA students and teacher’s books, green construction paper, scissors and tape, attendance and memory verse charts, songbook, CD/cassette tape and CD/tape player

Preparation

This is the first lesson of a new book. A new attendance and memory verse chart should be hung on the wall low enough for the children to reach. Be sure to allow time for the children to add a sticker to their chart for correctly reciting their memory verse. A small award, such as a ribbon or sticker may be given for the child to wear to Sabbath Service.

Beginners are natural “wigglers” – they simply cannot sit still for long periods of time. Plan all activities to be of short duration and provide opportunities for movement during your lesson. Alternate “quiet times” with activity times. Explain that in Bible times when a king rode into the city on the back of a horse it meant that he was going to battle. When a king rode on a donkey he was coming in peace. Jesus wanted the people to know that He was the King of Israel and that He came to bring peace. His followers were so happy to see Him. They shouted: “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord!” (Psalm 118:26).

Review Questions

1. What kind of animal did Jesus send His disciples to find?

2. What was the donkey used for?

3. Why did the people shout “Hosanna” at Jesus? Were they happy or angry?

4. What did the people do with their palm branches?
