PRAYER - talking with God
THE BLESSING - a prayer offered at mealtime, thanking God for the food
Tick tock went the clock. Kevin got out of his bed. The sun was shining brightly. Birds were singing. Kevin hurried down to breakfast. He was really hungry. He sat down and grabbed his spoon. “Kevin, please wait. Daddy hasn’t said the blessing,” said Mommy.
God gives you everything you have. He gives you food to eat and bright sunshine. He made the birds singing in the trees. God gave you Mommy and Daddy to take care of you. Don’t you think you should thank Him? When you say the blessing, you are thanking God for all these good things.
At lunch time Kevin asked Mommy if he could say the blessing. He bowed his head. Kevin said, “Thank you for the good food, and for Mommy fixing it. Amen.”
That night Mommy, Daddy and Kevin knelt beside the bed. They prayed a prayer much like Jesus taught His followers. Kevin thanked God for the warm sunshine, for the birds and his dog, Maggie. He thanked God for his warm house and bed, and for Mommy and Daddy.
Mommy told God that His name was Wonderful! She prayed that God would bring His Kingdom to earth. And, Daddy asked God to forgive them for doing bad things and said he would forgive anyone who hurt them. Then Daddy asked God to help them be good and obey God. You can talk to God anytime. God Hears You and will answer your prayers!

Bible, YEA Students’ and Teacher’s books, attendance and memory verse charts, stars, songbook, CD or cassette tape, music player, 22 x 28" poster board, glue, brad, magazine pictures
A preschooler learns about prayer from his experiences with prayer. If his family prays at meal time, that is prayer to him. He can be taught to pray at other times, like bedtime, when he is hurt, scared, or glad. He learns from prayer experiences that prayer is talking to God. Whatever a child can say to a parent, he can say to God, since he tends to think of God in parental terms.
Before class, cut a 1" wide strip from the side of the poster board. Cut out a minute and hour hand from this strip and color them black. Draw a clock by tracing around a large dinner plate in the center of the poster board. Add the numbers one through 12 inside the circle as seen on a clock. Brad the hands in the center of the clock so that they will move. Cut out magazine pictures of cereal or other breakfast food, sandwich (for lunch), a family sitting at a table (for dinner) and a bed. Glue these around the outside of the clock at: breakfast - 8:00; lunch - 12:00; dinner - 6:00; and bed - 8:00.
Play musical chairs. The child who is left standing when the music stops, gets to answer one of the following questions: (Add more questions if needed.)
1. When should we pray? (At meals and at bedtime.)
2. When we pray, who are we talking to? (Our Heavenly Father.)
3. Why do we pray? (To thank God for everything He has given us.)
4. What’s the last word you say in a prayer? (Amen.)
5. When we pray, do we, (a.) Look around the room, or (b.) Bow our heads? (Answer b)
6. What is prayer? (Talking with God.)

Forgive us for doing bad things,
