Words to Know

SPROUTED - began to grow

The Lesson

This is a story that Jesus told His helpers. One day a farmer went out into his field to plant some seeds. The farmer didn’t dig a hole in the soil. He just threw the seeds on the ground. Some of the seeds went on the hard path. People walked on them. Birds saw the seeds lying on the path. They ate them for a snack!

Some of the seeds fell among the rocks alongside the path. The seeds sprouted and tiny leaves came up. But after a few days they died. There was not enough soil to cover the seeds.

Other seeds landed where the grass and weeds grew. There was soil for the seeds. But the weeds were stronger and crowded the tiny seeds so they could not grow.

The farmer dug up the soil in his garden. It was very good soil. Seeds that fell in the soil got plenty of water and sunshine. They grew up strong and tall and made lots of fruit.

Jesus said the soil is like people who need to hear about Him. The seeds are like God’s Word. Some people are so busy they won’t hear God’s Word. Some people listen to God’s Word. But when their friends make fun of them they stop doing what God says.

The seeds that fell in the grass and weeds got crowded out. Every time you go to Sabbath School, God is planting seeds in your heart. When you learn your memory verse and pray, your seeds begin to grow. If you will obey God and your parents your seeds will one day become strong and make lots of fruit.

Materials Needed

Bible, YEA Students’ and Teacher’s books, songbook, CD or cassette tape, music player, attendance and memory verse charts, colored plastic cups, gravel, potting soil, flower seeds, Saran Wrap, rubber bands, container of water, red construction paper, scissors, tape

Preparation

Preschoolers’ coordination is improving rapidly. To keep their attention, they need many hands-on things for them to do. Children will remember more about lessons where several senses are involved in the learning process. Involving them in the clean up process will help them learn that they should always put things away when they are finished using them.

Purchase enough bright colored plastic cups for each child to have one, and one to be used for demonstration. Before class, put a little gravel in the bottom and fill each cup three quarters full with potting soil.

Photocopy the heart pattern onto red construction paper. Make enough for each child to have one.

Review Questions

1. What do seeds need in order to grow strong and healthy?

2. Why did some of the farmer’s seeds die?

3. What does God want to plant in our hearts?

4. What will happen when you pray and obey God?
